Fremantle Rates Increase to Fund Council Idealogy

The post on Roels Blog today is another reminder of why we have such high rates rises in Fremantle. To fund the Mayor and councillors green political party agendas.

WHY DOES FREO CITY PAY FOR BUSINESS PARKLET?

Its amazing how often the words Curtin or CUSP come in relation to issues in Fremantle.

The CUSP report $20,000 of rate payers and what did it achieve, it just told us what Brads being saying in the past. The question is what positive outcome did it have for Fremantle? Not much I can see.

Now the rate payers are paying more rates to help fund building of solar parklets, which take away parking and and will achieve very little for the rate payers of Fremantle, it might help the business they are in front of but that’s about it, does this one also have a CUSP or Curtin connection too on the mayors blog it seems too?

The Circus School was taken out of the running for the old naval stores in favour of Enkel, do they also have a Curtin connection?

The  city drove out the business and revenue from the Queensgatge redevelopment which has now sat vacant for over a year.  Losing revenue for the city rate payers, taking more people out of the CBD. Now we hear that its may be leased out short term at a discounted rate to another group without calling for an expression of interest from the general public, bit of a closed door deal so to speak. I wonder if this group has a Curtin connection?

Then we see another Curtin connection getting the deal to set up a pilot project for the carbon neutral schools, what does this have to do with rate payers funds you ask? Well nothing u would think but its quite clear the council is raising rates for rate payers, while others get discount deals or funding for projects that have nothing to do with sound use of rate payers funds.

For all these crappy funding models, what does the rate payer get apart from an increase in rates.

Another confidential meeting over the green bean cafe, then they left, now the cafe is open again with someone else, I didn’t see a call for expressions of interest called for by the council as you would expect, I wonder who got that deal and for what?

Time for rate payers to start asking why the high rate increases year in & year out, and what is the money being spent on and how does it benefit the amenity of the rate payers if at all? Actually rates are going up, services and down and council seems consumed in finding ways to waste rate payers money.

Fremantle Councillor Drive To Kill Off Local Business and Jobs

Source: Truck ban bid | Fremantle Herald Interactive

Lets look at the practicality of banning Trucks from Hampton Rd. Its Fremantle’s councils answer for everything ban, ban, ban.

All businesses west of Hampton Rd would be impacted with deliveries or operations that require trucks

The average brewery trucks are longer than a 20ft container truck, so that would make it quite difficult for pubs to get supplies.

No petrol for petrol stations west of Hampton Rd

I wonder how fishing boat harbour would function with no truck deliveries.

How would cruise ships get stores or deliveries on in Victoria Quay.

I guess that would make Little Creatures operations near impossible, no deliveries for them.

The council had an opportunity to redirect trucks off Hampton Rd by engaging with the state government to ensure that the Perth Freight Link did this function, leaving Hampton Rd only for necessary deliveries by trucks not through truck traffic. I guess they choose to not to ensure a good outcome for Freo.

Sadly as they are anti-car, anti-truck, anti road development they are also, anti business, anti jobs, anti development. You can’t have basic water front businesses that cant get deliveries. I guess this will make it difficult for businesses to move into Freo as they don’t know what our loony council will ban next. Bit hard to establish a business future with such instability.

Do they really think that they will be able to do all the development in Fremantle and ban containers at the same time.

I wonder how their events will run without containers?

When I drive down Hampton road the fastest traveling vehicles flying down the road are buses, trucks are stuck in the single congested lane with all the cars. the close calls I’ve seen for cyclists are the buses trying to overtake the bike riders without enough room for it when other vehicles are along side the bus.

You really wonder why a city ward councillor is trying to get traffic lights in Henderson, miles from Fremantles borders, this is the issue with many Fremantle councillors ,their constant meddling in others a fares, if they just stuck to relevant Fremantle issues which is what they are paid and there for.

Perhaps the real reason and timing for this story  is just another attempt by a councillor who has rarely been seen around town by the residents and ratepayers of the city ward, to get her profile out there for election time. Pretty sad a couple of months of community engagement ever 4 years.

Even sadder it must have been a slow news day for the herald to put his story on the front page of their paper, a rehashed idea that has been going on for 20 yrs plus, and the best the Councillor is promising is to lead a petition??? There is a reason its never been done, as with out a replacement route its a stupid impractical idea that shows little sense of the practicalities of life, business or common sense.

As a business and job killer its a great way to go. Fremantle already has a shocking reputation with delivery drivers as a place not to go to, business in town don’t need anymore challenges or extra costs.

What’s not surprising is this councillor Rachel Pemberton has spent her whole time saying what she is going to do, what she wants, I haven’t yet seen the action of representation, it seems to be all about her and what she wants.

Fremantle Council Only Green in Politics

Its quite sad that we have a Greens political driven council yet over the last 8-10 years our parks and Tree canopy and has suffered at their hands and has gotten worse across the board.

Research reveals Perth’s hottest real estate… in terms of tree canopy.

  • Fremantle has the 2nd worse Metro Tree Canopy in WA, now shown to have direct negative health issues.
  • Fremantle has the second worse hard surface covering in Australia, according to the 202020 study
  • Fremantle council has approved to concrete over parts of the esplanade reserve, replacing grass with concrete, how this suits a green plan I have no idea.
  • Fremantle council has plans to approve more buildings for Princess park, more concrete to replace grass and cutting down more mature trees.
  • Fremantle council has approved plans to build on and fence part of an A class reserve at J-Shed, turning over public space for private companies to profit off.
  • Fremantle council has more plans approved for more concrete for the esplanade reserve, maybe they should call it Fremantles grey plan, not green plan
  • Fremantle council has approved plans to concrete grass areas at south beach, again more concrete to replace grass.
  • Fremantle council approved plans to cut down 100+ mature trees at Kim Beazley, which will take decades to replace and thousands of tonnes of additional water with possibly a 30 % of trees that are planted that will not survive. Leaving this area with lost tree canopy for decades.
  • Fremantle council approved plans for the Kim Beazley site not to have the additional 10% open public space.
  • Fremantle council approved a plan for the green fill site @Burt St to ramp up zoning to over R100, with no need to supply the required 10% open public space again.
  • Plan to flatten 100’s of homes and cut down all the trees on South st to build their light rail.

So from all this, we should believe they give a damn about open public space, parks and the tree canopy of our suburbs?

I know I  have raised these points before but as council consistently says it cares about, open space, tree canopy etc, but its actions tell another story completely.

Read the article from the West above in blue, its worth reading.

Remember don’t just believe what council says but look at their actions as it tells a different story.

Since the 202020 report was done, in Fremantle hard surface has increased and tree canopy has got worse. That’s just in 2 years under a council driven by green politics. So since our mayor brad pettitt and many of the current councillors have on council, our tree canopy has got worse and hard coverage has increased, leaving Fremantle in current,  2nd worse rating in Australia.

They drive their own politic ideology not the resident’s best interests. Politics 1st people later.

Fremantle’s Councils Rabbit Shame

photo

Today I had a friend send me a picture of this dead rabbit,  they found it laying out in front of the esplanade by Henry St about lunch time. It seems councillors are still approving pindone a slow step  anticoagulant poison, leaving its digester a slow painful death?

How does council approve the use of this slow cruel death for animals?

They talk about tree canopy but approve plans to cut down old established trees

They talk about having less hard hard coverage of our city, i.e. less concrete, yet they laid concrete in the esplanade and have planned plenty more for the reserve, + on south beach park, princess park etc.

They talk about protecting our city’s heritage yet approve inappropriate developments.

They talk about not running events based on alcohol but approve them anyway.

Talk about supporting small bars yet approve 1000+ booze barns.

It just goes on and on so not surprising we see the rabbit situation.

I did a blog post on the council rabbit extermination policy a while back, triggered by an article in the West Australian.

Fremantle’s New Bunny Problem

So I did a bit of reading on the subject, the herald did a piece in 2013 on the same issue with a similar picture.

BUNNIES GO BYE-BYE

08-17news

Fremantle Herald

“RABBITS poisoned by Fremantle city council are returning to tunnels under the Carriage Café to die, their decaying corpses leaving behind a stench for patrons.

The council says it’s the café’s responsibility to remove the rotting corpses from under its expansive deck.

Kel Smith owns the iconic café and isn’t happy. He says he’s been asking the council for two months to trap the animals and never expected them to use poison in the inner city. “Baits, I believe should not be an option for health and safety reasons,” he says.

Council CEO Graeme Mackenzie says baiting using radiated oats “infused with Pindone” is approved by WA agriculture.

“Baits [were] placed along the railway reserve fence outside of readily accessible public areas,” he says. “To date, four rabbits have been collected as a result of the baiting, but the majority of rabbit warrens have been found to be underneath the Carriage Café and therefore are the responsibility of the tenant to manage.”

Mr Mackenzie says trapping has “proved costly and ineffective”.

The Herald wandered down to the cafe Friday and wrinkled its nose at the unmistakeable funk coming up from underneath the café deck.

Just to the left of the park, near Marine Terrace, a crow was feasting on the remains of a poisoned rabbit.

South Fremantle local Anne Roberts was lunching at the café last Thursday with friends when the group caught a whiff of “something dying”: “It came drifting across the park and I’m not sure where it was coming from but it was definitely something dying.”

Mr Smith describes the council’s response to his calls for it to deal with the corpses as “unsatisfactory”. One councillor made light of the issue, with Cr Rob Fittock replying in an email to Mr Smith: “Roger the Rabbit has whispered that the bunnies have taken the easy way out by not digging burrows and are living under the carriage, eating the baits while cavorting around the park at night and returning home to die. A shame to kill them but what do you do with them when you trap them?”

So I was surprised that even though this has been reported the council has continued inflicting  such a cruel slow death for the rabbits.

Not to mention the unsightly sight of dead rabbits laying about such public spaces. The smell of rotting bodies, the rats it would attract.

Now with some reading on pindone the Agriculture Department of WA makes this comment  ” Less selective in action. Known to cause the deaths of kangaroos and bandicoots, and is toxic to a number of birds (e.g. parrots, eagles) and domestic animals (e.g. sheep, horses, cattle).”

The RSPCA says “Baiting with pindone is often recommended for rabbit control in semi-rural areas where 1080 cannot be used, but the RSPCA does not consider this as an acceptable control method as poisoned rabbits can suffer for several days prior to death.”

Pindone is an anticoagulant that kills by interfering with blood clotting, causing fatal haemorrhages. According to Trudy Sharp and Glen Saunders, scientists from the NSW Department of Primary Industries, who prepared a Model Code of Practice for the humane control of rabbits for the federal government, it takes around 10 to 14 days for rabbits to die following initial ingestion of pindone. During that time the animals bleed from the nose, mouth, eyes and anus, and pain from bleeding in internal organs, muscles and joints lasts for several days before they die. They conclude: “Because anticoagulant poisons take several days to kill, during which time they cause distress, disability and/or pain, they are considered inhumane.”

So while I see the rabbit situation must be dealt with, I don’t think having dead and dying animals laying around public areas or using this slow method is the way to go.

Perth Freight Link some other Facts

“MATT TAYLOR is the state Liberal MP for Bateman and in this week’sTHINKING ALLOWED defends the Perth Freight Link.

I AGREE with the federal member for Fremantle Melissa Parke MP (Herald Thinking Allowed, September 5, 2015) that it is vitally important we take this opportunity to focus on a project critical to Perth’s long-term transport network.”

FIGHTING FOR YOU

A good piece by Matt Taylor bringing up some facts that are not forward by the objectors to the PKL.

It surprises me when I talk to people how little facts they have on the issue, its generally based on emotion, which is also partial the governments fault with them being so slow to release information in an easy to find format.

The amount of misinformation in the community is huge, things like a huge alley being carved thru White Gum Valley are just simply rubbish, how gullible would you need to be to believe such crap.

To be sure if the stage 2 part of Roe 8 is not done right Fremantle residents will get no real benefits and could get a road that divides our community.

Done right it could be a great benefit making travel faster, more efficient, safer, cheaper and open up Fremantle for business that it is not exposed to now. As well as removing from our streets all the traveling through, traffic with no intention of stopping in Fremantle traffic from our suburbs.  Not to mention the trucks. Opening good medium density residential on a heavy rail line. Raising revenue to help fund the project. Improving the freight rail link, opening great opportunities for increasing and improving public transport without Fremantle’s Councils destructive light rail link going up south st and at cheaper cost to the tax payer. Opening up a great pedestrian and cycle link from Coogee to Leighton beach.

Sadly the vocal minority have decided to just oppose but not engage which could sadly leave us with the worse outcome if the road goes ahead.
