No Majors for Fremantle

We see in the Herald again the state of Fremantle and its constantly demising situation with business and retail in town.

This week we read in the Herald that Coles is near to the end of its lease.

coles-and-woolies-no-freo-down-down-down-v1

Woolies is already gone, so if Coles goes that will leave Fremantle the second city in W.A. after Perth without  a major supermarket. Possibly the only city in Australia with out a major supermarket, it would be another first for Mayor Brad.

Myers gone for more than 3 yrs and the place is still vacant, Kings Sq business plan keeping the CBD dead, at its heart. Well apart from the drunks and druggies, their dealers, the vagrants, beggars.and all of the rest of the people who seem to form there sadly giving Freo its  anti-social  reputation. This is a big killer for tourism as well. The history side has so much to offer but that is also being destroyed with issues like J-shed, showing the council complete lack of respect for this natural business/tourism draw of the Round House, Fremantle’s history and architecture

This council has seen many major retailers leave the city of the last decade or so.

  • Myer
  • Harvey Norman
  • Spotlight,
  • Dymocks
  • Gloria Jeans
  • Angus & Robertson
  • Thingz Gifts
  • Dick Smith
  • McDonald’s
  •  plus so many other retailers too numerous to list.

COLES NEAR END OF LEASE

WOOLIES EXITS

Fremantle Myer’s $30m makeover will ‘rival’ Claremont Quarter

Here we see the importance the mayor put on keeping Myers,

“Mr Pettit said the Myer building make-over would be the catalyst for the city’s rejuvenation.

“I hope it will really start the rejuvenation of retail in Fremantle as an eclectic centre,” he said.

“It’s looking a bit tired and rundown and in need of a face lift. This will start it off.”

A bit scary if he thought the place was tired and rundown then, what does he think it is now, not to mention the for Lease signs dotted all over the city. Here he see the Myers significance, when they go oh well, we don’t need them they are not so important, 3 yrs later, much bigger impact losing them, seemingly he  just has  no idea and flip flops back forth to which ever situation he finds himself in.

Now we see another icon gone from Freo if Mills leaves. THE FUTURE of one of the oldest record shops in Fremantle is in doubt.

MILLS TO GO?

I would ask when do we think he will wake up to reality, but from this spin doctor, I would say never.

Then we see a letter also in the Herald setting a few facts straight for council on a number of issues, including the fact Freo is dying in Front of them and they are more interested in playing their political games than ensuring Fremantle decline is brought to a halt and it can reestablish its self to its former glory, ie before they started screwing things up

Heres the letter from the herald, Highlight a few bits that people have been saying for years about this Mayor and his Merry band.

Australia Day not about racism
I should like to reply to Councillor Wainwright’s tirade in last week’s Thinking Allowed (“It takes a wilful ignorance,” Herald, September 24 2016).
But first would like to assure Councillor Wainwright that the sting most certainly hasn’t gone out of the debate about the Fremantle council decision to cancel the Australia day celebrations, and take this opportunity to remind him, that he and the other Fremantle Councillors, were elected to serve and represent the residents of Fremantle and not so they had a forum or stage to spout their own politically correct opinions.
How dare this man compare “unfavourably” Australia to other countries who have far-far less liberal views than ours. Despite both Cr Wainwright and Mayor Pettitt’s denials that their decision wasn’t [motivated by] political correctness, the decision to cancel the very popular Australia Day fireworks is of course nothing less than political correctness gone mad.
Despite this council’s claims to have attracted new business to Fremantle, under Mayor Pettitt’s leadership the opposite has been the case with many large retailers, including a cinema and Woolworths, upping stakes and leaving Fremantle, the old Myer building, empty for years, remains empty, with Mayor Pettitt being forced to go cap in hand to the State Government for help in finding a tenant—none of Mayor Pettitt’s boasts about various hotels opening have eventuated. Many old established business have, through lack of trade, been force to close their doors.
The council’s latest decision to cancel Australia Day will do nothing to improve this sad situation, nor will Mayor Pettitt’s claim to replace Australia Day with an “amazing” celebration. The politically correct decision by Fremantle council to cancel the popular Australia Day will not be followed by the rest of the nation because Australia Day is not, never has been, never will be about race or racism: It is a celebration that Aussies of all colours, creeds, religious and political persuasions can, and have, enjoyed for years.
One of the reasons given for cancelling Australia Day was they couldn’t justify spending $130,000 on a firework display, but the council’s decision to spend millions on upgrading/rebuilding the Town Hall seemed to them is perfectly reasonable?
The decision taken by the majority of Fremantle councillors proves beyond doubt that they have not only lost touch with the average Fremantle resident, but have also lost their trust and the only honourable thing for them to do is resign. In this writer’s opinion it’s a shame that we haven’t some kind of financial recourse from these councillors for the damage they have done.
Finally might I suggest if Fremantle council are truly interested in attracting new business and tourists to Fremantle they come out from the plush offices and do something about the drunks, drug takers/sellers and layabouts who are increasingly frequenting our streets.

Many in Freo can see the problems sadly our council is just out of touch.

Beaconsfield Community Votes for Independence but did it just get more party politics?

We see on WAEC website the final result for the weekends extraordinary election result for Beaconsfield in the City of Fremantle (COF).

First up well done to all the candidates who took their time to engage in their community it takes time, effort and passion also congratulations to the winner Hannah Fitzhardinge.

BEACONSFIELD WARD
Vacancies (1) Councillor
Expiry of term 21 October 2017
Turnout rate 34.74%
Candidates Votes Percentage Expiry of Term
CRUICKSHANK, Peter 91 7.18%
LUOBIKIS, Andrew 279 22.02%
FITZHARDINGE, Hannah 534 42.15% 21 October 2017
CAMARDA, Fedele J 363 28.65%
Total valid votes 1,267 100%

This years extraordinary election in Beaconsfield has seen the biggest turn out since 2009, showing that the local community is more engaged than they have been in years.

Clearly the community gave its biggest vote against party aligned candidates since 2009.

Yet another sign the community is over this council and its wheeling and dealing, FB pics shows the Mayors ring masters awaiting the votes tally.

This election we even see complaints into the WAEC, against independents on electioneering issues, tossed aside by the authorities, I wonder how close those individuals are too Council?

Just showing how organised council is to keep the community voice limited to what it wants too hear.

Beaconsfield, since 2009 has had both councillors aligned to political parties, as members, staff or as the case is now, ex staff for the labor party.

Now we see the community direction giving its biggest vote since 2009 against the candidates with party politics backing with over 57.85% of voters voting for independence.

Sadly as we have seen over the last 10 years or so very little achieved for the actual electors in the COF, with the focus on party issues and agendas.

Lets hope Hannah steps up for beccie not party politics. Interesting the vote for Dave Humes 2011 election and this election in 2016 where very similar numbers, is that a reflection of the partys’ depth in the ward.

So big picture the community did not get what it wanted, an independent candidate.

What electors are mostly likely to get in any Freo local Elections, lets hope this time its different?

Fremantle Council Crackers over Crackers (Australia Day)

Its amazing that from 2015 to 2016 a complete back-flip over how Australia day is celebrated and the Mayor bringing into question if it should be celebrated at all.

Here we see a Fremantle council press release on this very issue, its all big, fantastic, inclusive , what changed in 12 months, the celebration didn’t, the day didn’t , what Australia Day means hasn’t changed for decades.

Fireworks & festivals – Fremantle kicks off a massive 2015 with biggest ever Australia Day fireworks

Australia Day must the most inclusive day Australia has. everyone is welcome, people may choose not to come, that’s their choice

A couple of quotes from a then freo councillor on Australia Day.

“Fremantle Deputy Mayor, Josh Wilson said he was excited to see the Australia Day celebrations kick-off a year of unparalleled activity in terms of festivals and events in Fremantle.
“Families from all over Perth have enjoyed Fremantle’s distinctively relaxed Australia Day celebrations since its humble Cracker Night beginnings many years ago and  I know everyone in Freo has taken pride in seeing our celebration blossom into this fantastic one-of-a-kind event in recent times,” Deputy Mayor Wilson said.
“This year the fireworks also mark the start of an incredible period of arts and cultural activity with both the inaugural Freo Royale fringe program and the St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival arriving in February.  These major events are part of a massive 2015 arts calendar that delivers on Fremantle Council’s vision for making Freo a world-class festival city.”
No mention of invasion day then, strange if its such a big issue now, wouldn’t you think?
So if was all great last year, what happened, did Josh take the council matchbox of common sense/reality when he left? How did it go from biggest ever to canceled?
Australia Day includes, citizenship events, Australian of the year ceremonies, families and friends getting together, The Australian day committee claims that 1/2 the population of Australia goes to these events around our country. Can it get much more inclusive than than.
So we have gone from this it last year being a massive community and business success; to Mayor Killjoy (brad pettitt) wanting to kill off the atmosphere and run down another local tradition and ban stuff again.

Fremantle Mayor Suggests  Moving  Australia Day Away From January 26

Even better the Mayor is stated as saying  “The mayor of Fremantle has expressed his surprise that a decision to cancel the city’s Australia Day celebrations has become a nationwide debate.” Seriously how clueless can you be, is he that blinded by his own personal party political agendas, he can’t see thousands of people enjoying  this national celebration. Try looking at your at local community leaders coming out to condemn the councillors actions,

  • Warren Mundine labels Freo fireworks snub ‘a silly
  • Australia Day fireworks axe slammed by indigenous MP Ben Wyatt
  • Fremantle chamber of commerce
It takes years to build these events into an attraction where people look forward to coming, it costs money and lots of effort to build the events to get such recognition. Now we see the Fremantle Mayor and majority of councillors take decades of work and throw it aside for a chance to drive an Politically based agenda at the communities expense, nothing knew there for Freo its councils MO.
The only people who are not welcome at Australia Day are people who make them selves not welcome. The date is a place maker in history banning what-ever will not change this.
No one involved in the actual events is still around they are all long gone centuries ago. For sure they event date could change will it solve the issues, not really, quickly enough, something else be an issue to replace it. Europe over the space of 80 years or so had 2 world wars then moved to establish,  European Union, common currency etc.
This so called protest is bathed in politics and has very little to do with actual issues and if anything will only cause more divide, which seems to be the real intent.
Over the last decade we see the green/lefty groups with their attacks on ANZAC, with claims it glorifies war, completely ignoring the main theme for ANZAC day, “Lest we forget”.
It doesn’t really matter what the subject is these groups are driven to cause divide in our community, as our basic principle of government (democracy doesn’t suit them) as they know the mass will not agree with their big picture plan. So we see small groups attacking the Australian Way of life and at best are divisive in our community.  Bad timing for them as ANZAC day has just gone from strength to strength in our Australian community.
Sadly this attack on Australia Day is just another attempt at going against the establishment by a  few in the lefty greenie political arena.
We read of the regular dribble from Councillors,  now about evil people who drive utes, or have BBQ’s, even worse the racists who dare to display the Australian Flag, and finally the fascists who are so despicable that they fly an Australia Flag from their cars; can you imagine. This is the level of conversation and BS our councillors have reached to drive divides in our community, its really quite pathetic.
Does it do their job being councillors?
Does it improve the amenity of Rate Payers?
Does it do anything to do, apart from drive their political agendas, using council as a tool to further, their minority divisive rhetoric?

I have a lot more to say about the so called invasion and the complete lack of facts and again we lefties giving new meanings to words in our language to suit their own agendas, i.e. definition of Colonization and invasion to start with.  The lefties need to learn the can’t ignore facts and re-write history to suit their twisted agendas.

More on that in another post as this is getting too long already.

Greens for trees | Fremantle Herald Interactive, But their actions tell another story

THE Greens are promising to double Fremantle’s tree canopy by 2040 under an “urban forest” plan. Freo council has already adopted a policy to increase the dire coverage of trees over barren streets…

Source: Greens for trees | Fremantle Herald Interactive

Where’s the Trees, where’s the Green?

Words are one thing all politicians are good at, action is another thing completely.

The Fremantle Council has a few greens on it and currently Fremantle has the 2nd worst hard surface amount in WA, according to the 202020, report.

Since that report was done we have seen the Esplanade Concreted over, worsening that particular situation.

We have seen the majority of these councilors; approve a plan that cut down 100+ mature trees in White Gum Valley on the Old Kim Beazley site.

They also did not demand that the developer give the necessary 10% additional open public space as is normal with these developments, instead allowed them to use the public space that was already there. So the developer could get in more small blocks adding more concrete and hard surface covering.

Then we see the Burt St development went down a similar path with council again not stipulating the required 10% open public space, again allowing more concrete more hard surface covering.

We see this council with all these Fremantle council members most of houses, driving for smaller and small blocks, higher R-codes, high density, more med high rise development, which leads to more and more trees being cut down.

Again we see the Concrete from our green council pouring into our parks so they build basketballs on park land which Fremantle already in short supply.

Most councils in the world supply similar services to their residents, sporting areas are great. What most councils with an ounce of common sense do is invest that money into areas that are run down or poorly utilized, in disrepair etc, to build these public services. Not Fremantle council they go straight for the park land and trees, pouring in the concrete.

Then we see more concrete coming down a Port beach with the new flow rider system, more open land for concrete.

We see in a report last year that over 90% of new trees planted by councils don’t make, so for even the ones that do we have to wait 2 decades to see some benefit from them. You think that would make the existing trees even more precious, well I guess not for Freo council.

So when they say they will improve the tree canopy to double by 2040, I see they didn’t make a note of what the coverage is presently, so we are clear from what point we are starting from. Otherwise just expect more of our Mayors unique smoke and mirrors, slide of hand. Also not clarified is whether, Fremantle’s means the CBD, the greater city of Fremantle, the State Electoral boundaries, or the Federal election boundaries

We have many of these councilors and mayor for a decade now, yet still our tree canopy shrinks.

So with it taking at least 20 yrs. to get a tree and its canopy established , all going well, that means  for the Greens to succeed they would have to double all the trees currently in Fremantle, have them all survive and grow above the roof line of houses to be considered a canopy.

That’s a bit hard when the greens on council are hell bent on density, which now is just clearing blocks removing everything just to squeeze as many dwellings as possible.

Then we have the Councils drive for urban rail and the route the Mayor and his team are taking that will be hundred’s more trees cut down to facilitate that.

Then we have the ever increasing amount of containers coming from the Fremantle port even if the Outer Harbour is built, and of course our council has objected to that too. Instead building the massive Lat 32 which adds 140 km2’s of hard coverage to Cockburn and destroying any tree canopy there too. So it’s hard to see how they will double tree canopy when the Fremantle Council supported policy is to build the biggest industrial park in Australia.

So actions speaking louder than words, it’s a fairly pie in the sky promise, which should have its intended action of rallying a few voters for the green cause and have its disciples sprouting the virtues of the Green Dogma, while its agents at Council, keep driving up the R-zoning clearing more trees, and laying more concrete. Going in the opposite direction of the said promise, only to blame, capitalists, Tony Abbott or conservatives about the evil ways when in fact it looks like the greens are just showing their hypocrisy yet again.

What is Urban Tree Canopy?

Urban tree canopy (UTC) is the layer of leaves, branches, and stems of trees that cover the ground when viewed from above. In urban areas, the UTC provides an important storm water management function by intercepting rainfall that would otherwise run off of paved surfaces and be transported into local waters though the storm drainage system, picking up various pollutants along the way. UTC also reduces the urban heat island effect, reduces heating/cooling costs, lowers air temperatures, reduces air pollution, increases property values, provides wildlife habitat, and provides aesthetic and community benefits such as improved quality of life.

Urban Bush land Council’s Mary Gray agreed that more trees were needed in metropolitan areas,,,

“Unfortunately, they tend to bulldoze the whole landscape instead of looking at what’s there and then building in amongst it.

“It seems crazy to wipe the whole lot out.”

Killing the Great Australian Dream – Limit urban sprawl, says Freo mayor Brad Pettit – The West Australian

Is Kings Sq Cash Cow, the Department of Housing Move All Over, Lost with other Barnett’s Proposed Fire Sale of Public Assets?

So we see in Parliament that some of the Liberals government sale of public assets, are off the table as the depressed property market is killing off the chance of a good sale price.

The other night WA Treasury has admitted that the sale of Assets like the Department of Housing (DOH) is no longer fiscally responsible, so they are off the table.

Will Fremantle’s Mayor Brad Pettitt, obsession over Kings Square at any cost to its rate payers, now finally do down in flames saving the COF from a potential financial  disaster? Has the sway of luck finally fallen Fremantle’s way.

So with the sale of the DOH property all over, how will the state government justify the relocation of the DOH to Fremantle, as they now live/reside in a rent free bottom line. Not to mention the millions of tax payers funds needed to relocate the 1000’s+ work force from Perth to Freo.

The question is, how  would the government justify the movement of such a department when clearly now the financial position has completely changed?

Many financial questions will be asked of this government in the next state election, will the Fremantle’s Councils Kings Square debacle be one of them?

Or will Barnetts boys brush this skeleton finally from its closet?
