HUGE URBAN DEVELOPMENT POTENTIAL FOR FREMANTLE | Freo’s View

My thoughts on Roel post on his blog, my family live in this area so i think i have quite a good understanding of what locals think, i don’t know anyone who owns there own home in the area that wants high density or large apartment blocks. the area has been plagued with anti-social issues, drug dealing and petty crime and vandalism. History from the world tells us that the higher the density the worse the problem. We have a council that drives this high density but as best i know most of them live in houses with yards, garages, drive ways etc, not the they preach how everyone should live.

Roel the community in Blinco St are galready up in-arms about development just across the road as their homes/houses where getting two story in front of them. Not to mention the street already has huge parking issues. So how you think that 8 stories is OK I have no idea.

The area has a mountain of homes West housing just up the street, just over in Beaconsfield is a whole lot more, known as the Beacy Broncs, also well known for massive police raids and a continually hot bed of trouble, petty crime home invasions, vandalism graffiti and intimation to those who call the authorities to complain. Across the road on the northern side of High St is a heap more.

Just up the Hill from this area going East, they have over a couple of years homes demolished, Homes West houses, which were also well known for drug dealing hot spots and domestic violence.

Some quotes from the herald

https://heraldonlinejournal.com/2015/05/15/homeswest-shafts-freo/

“He says some locals will welcome Homes west’s exit as tenants’ drug-dealing has been an issue for years.”

“Hope Street’s Les Moyle has lived in the area for 32 years and he’s glad to see the back of Homes west and hopefully backyard meth labs and police visits.”

https://heraldonlinejournal.com/2015/09/11/ice-concern-grips-valley/

I was standing alongside Steve Grant when he took the photo at this community group meeting, 6 or 7 mins walk from the place your article is referring too. Again lots of promises at the this meeting about actions the council was going to take, (possibly as it was just before an election) now the election has past, action seems pretty much nothing on the  issue.

Fremantle already has a higher than average % of homes west than the average suburb and needs no more. Just 2 weeks ago we see cars torched at the cold store area as drug dealing issues come to the front in homes west houses again.

Tales of blood and bins

https://heraldonlinejournal.com/2016/02/19/driven-out/

“Car blaze last straw for terrified tenant

A CAR that was set alight in an alleged arson attack belongs to a man who was last week involved in a fracas with neighbours at Fremantle’s Cold Stores housing complex(“Residents besieged,” Herald, February 13, 2016).

A 43-year-old fellow tenant of the WA Housing complex between Queen Victoria and Beach Streets has been charged with criminal damage by fire”

We shouldn’t even need to mention the traffic issues in the area as both High St and Stevens St have traffic issue leaving the valley on Steven St at both ends is already dangerous with dumb design on Hampton Rd and the council ignoring a decade of complaints about the other end on Carrington where you have to blindly out onto a major rd.

South St has its own set of problems and the High St intersection with Stirling Hwy is another traffic black spot, well known for accidents and is full of trucks from the port as it’s the major route out.

The local primary school is full, past capacity with transportable units on the school oval. The Kim Beazley site is yet to have single resident move in, which is set to add 100’s more on just one block, in the middle of the mess I have just mentioned

And you think adding thousands on more people into a suburb area in high rises to create future slums is a good idea?

You may not have noticed but people who spend millions on penthouses don’t like the idea of a possible drug dealer or meth lab on the ground floor under their penthouse, having to rely on the roll of the dice you get from homes west.

High density in this area would be a disastrous outcome for what was another leafy green suburb, rapidly being destroyed by a political motivated councils density drive which is destroying our tree canopy and massively increasing our urban heat sink

Ours suburbs should look more like this

than more concrete boxes like we see on Amherst St as in your pics.

Leaving less and less space for kids to play while driving more traffic in poorly designed and maintained road network

The council could not f-/: up more if they tried.

I have been to places our Mayor  Brad Pettitt wants to mimic like Malmo, I have friends from there and outlaying districts all have seen their amenity deteriorating, as Malmö has become a centre for crime, violence, drug dealing and organized crime.

Not exactly what I would like to see copied into Freo we have enough shit as it is.

Councils bill ratepayers for 150 trips – The West Australian

Perth mayors and councillors took more than 150 ratepayer-funded trips last year at cost of nearly $500,000.

Looks like Fremantle council skates by critic on its flight even though the Mayor Brad Pettitt just returned from ✈ Europe on a trip to look at liveable cities, no serious that’s the reason,

Add to that a trip to Japan to look at burning rubbish, Freo’s net gain on these expenses, you guessed it zero. Well apart from the bill for our mayors junket trips incurred, and at  least for every day he’s out of the country is day’s less to damage Freo.

Killing the Great Australian Dream – Limit urban sprawl, says Freo mayor Brad Pettit – The West Australian

Call for urban boundary to define Perth’s metropolitan area rather than allow for continued growth.

Source: Limit urban sprawl, says Freo mayor Brad Pettit – The West Australian

As long as I can remember I have just wanted a house to live in, just like I grew up in. The block may not be as big no huge gum tree in the back yard to climb and play in but it’s pretty damn close. I’m lucky to have a house which has become a home for my family. Giving me a chance to give my child some of the great experiences I had growing up.

A safe place to play, invite friends to come over and play with, The great Aussie BBQ which we have had many with friends and family. Place for pets to roam freely, chicken taking care of our kitchen scraps, rewarding us with eggs for not throwing it in the rubbish, fruit trees, veggie garden, aquaponics for fish and herbs, giving my little boy and education on where food comes from and how to practically use our waste, with worm farms, compost, bokashi, solider fly farms etc great place for bees to live and another bonus of honey while pollinating our 15 so fruit trees..

Non of this will exist in Brads high rises, everything for rubbish will need to be collected and processed just like a large factory, not exactly living is it?

I have also had the good fortune to live all around the world in high density cities like Hong Kong, Singapore, KL, Miami, NY, London.

That’s when I realized how lucky we are in Australia with the life style we have.

While in these city you see every time there is an accident, fire, natural disaster, disease out break, the higher the density the greater the casualty rates.

Now to think that the only way we can be environmentally friendly is to live in high density areas is just crap. It might be the dumbest easy solution? But with the right mixture of incentives for business, government departments and jobs to develop out with the sprawl, and finding incentives  to encourage people to live with a certain distance of their jobs. We can maintain a live style worth having while controlling our foot print.

Or as Paul says build new hubs to drive businesses away from one hub and made several more satellites cities, like Mandurah, Joondalup and Midland.

Sooner or later cars will not run on fossil fuels, fixing the pollution argument, the style of car we drive in 20 yrs maybe completely different.

So while Brad Pettitt our Mayor is determined to force his personal ideology on the rest of us, even though he doesn’t seem to practice what he preaches, it should send a clear message to the wider community if guy runs for state or federal government, he’s the guy you want to vote for if you like living in a  hi-rise Dog box, no car, surrounded by concrete, no tree canopy, concrete parks and booze barns, while he lives in a house with a garden across from a great green oasis with his 2 cars parked out front. While your rates increase each year to fund he’s personally ideology and so he can give our assets for free for business to profit off while, spending your money on his jet set junket trips overseas. Sounds good right?

Cost of Fremantle Mayors Rate Payer Funded Junket, Doubles

He seems perfect for politics, a real hypocrite no?

But I’ll be voting to live not just to exist in a concrete jungle.

Fremantle Made Junkets

Fremantle Council Called Out For Wasting Rate Payers Money on Personnel Ideology

Freo’s green initiatives machine fails in plastic bag crusade

“Fremantle’s reputation for green causes precedes it and the council has been an assiduous supporter — often with ratepayer cash — of an array of environmental initiatives.”

Finally the main stream media in WA have removed their Rose coloured glasses in regards to Fremantle council.

This sort of reporting is a breath of fresh air for the dozen or so community groups that fremantle councils just dismisses out right when ever the try to raise issues with council or its grafitti loving Mayor Brad Pettitt, who publicly berated the President of the Fremantle Society, when he dared question a project the mayor is a major supporter of.

As we see below if u disagree with the mayor,  your  not sensible, words as typed by the mayor.

It is true that I was disappointed that Fremantle Society Henty Farrar (who is normally very sensible, informed and balanced in his views) based his rather critical public comments on,,,,,,,,,

The facts from Peirs Verstegen story in the West is clearly wrong as in fact MLC Peter Katsinbanis does officially represent people in Fremantle as its part of his electorate and it was not just libs who voted against it but 2 other parties as well, like normal quickly brushed over facts.

I love the greens outrage that another ban has failed, it seems that’s their whole policy for WA is a huge list of ban this ban that. Interesting that Lynn MacLaren talks of Fremantles councils legal entitlements to react to community desires, she has been very quiet on the communities desires NOT to have a booze barn at J-Shed for dozens of good reasons, guess its green backing green no matter what the cost.

What of course neither article mentioned were that Gareth Parkers article brings up a complaint,  that’s been made for years about the Fremantle council is the waste of rate payers money on their own personal ideologies.

Of course the greens would not complain about a carbon neutral fund ($30, 000+ of rate payers $$$$) for schools, being awarded by the city of Fremantle  to a member of the greens company, just about the time of her running for the bi-election for the federal seat of Canning, a mere coincidence to be sure.

These issues are just the tip of the iceberg for poor use or inappropriate of rate payers funds, should the West decide to dig a little deeper there is an Aladdin cave of stories to be published on the poor use of rate payers funds in Fremantle.

The Kings Sq business plan would be a great place to start, before we have a mayor building a monument to himself.

Its interesting the fear that local businesses have, about speaking openly about this issue,  as a shop owner put it to me, the FFF,( Freo Feral Factor) they did actually say the FFFF I’ll leave to your imagination what the 4th F was for. But there is a real concern by people if you voice your disapproval on certain issues, that some anti-social issues will be coming your way. Pretty poor in the 21st century in a Democracy like Australia that people have that concern, its more akin to stasi based organizations with stand over tactics or those who use public intimidation to drive their personal agendas.

This is an issue I have had mentioned to me before from other government bodies that have no wish to do community meeting issues, due to their staff being abused, spat on, intimated etc. Just like Telstra fixing vandalized equipment, their attitude why bother, new replaced today, trashed tomorrow.

Lucky Businesses had someone like Peter Katsambalis to turn too.

Fremantle Council Crash and Burn on Plastic Bags Again

1st of all should we be using plastic bags that the council is trying to ban, probably not.

Yet again the councils mind set that they are the ones to make laws on what are really stage or federal  issues shows the pig headed stupidity of our councillors.

I wrote several blogs on this issue some time back they speak of the missed opportunity  our council has chosen, their lack of vision,  the stupidity of the plan and the complete lack of a grasp of reality thinking that banning businesses in fremantle from using plastic bags, would actually achieve any real outcome. Its another cheap tacky feel good move from council, with lots of $ spent (wasted) with nothing achieved apart from our Mayor getting his face in print or on TV, no problems right the rate payer is paying.

Who the hell is council to say who and who doesnt get punished by their bag ban, leaving many business in Freo even worse off than they where before under freo councils business killing ideas.

What’s happened to Fremantle Councils Missed Opportunity with Plastic Bags

The Fremantle council is brilliant at throwing rate payers money away at these failing ideas. One is a carbon free school project nothing to do with rate w/payers money. The endless money pit called, one planet or its failed solar dump. One thing that is sure they are fancy and free with our money, while real results are few and far between.

Its amazing main stream media doesn’t pay more attention to the cash burning projects our councils get up too.
