Interesting Article from the Fremantle Gazette exposing more reports that are kept from public view covering the impact of Not building the PFL or the Roe 8 & 9’s

Sadly this project, while able to lessen many stresses on our urban road networks, this issue has become highly politicized and the real benefits and negatives have been lost to small groups of individuals fear mongering the local communitys so no rational community discussion has actually been held to discuss the pros and cons and allow locals to have a balance thought without the hate and fear elements so commonly found in these issues.

PORTELLI BITTER ON SHELVING

BIBRA LAKE COCKBURN councillor Steve Portelli has joined with Melville Mayor Russell Aubrey to highlight the additional congestion and environmental consequences of shelving Roe 8, believing his own council is ignoring the findings of a traffic study which point toward a need for the road.

An independent traffic study commissioned by the City of Cockburn forecasts 35 stretches of road will need to be widened by 2031 to cope with the increase in daily vehicle movements in both Melville and Cockburn if Roe 8 is not built.

“It has got to the stage now that I am so frustrated and disappointed with the stalling of Roe 8 that I had to speak to someone that is for it,” Cr Portelli said.

“We have to get a strategy together and get the word out there because the community has been misled.

“Roe 8 is not just about diverting traffic away from South Street and Leach Highway but also from Cockburn’s east-west linking roads such as Farrington Road, Bibra Drive, Berrigan Drive, Russell Road, North Lake Road and Beeliar Drive.

“Close to 80,000 daily traffic movements will be taken away from those roads and out of our residential suburbs.”

Both Cr Aubrey and Cr Portelli believe that constructing a new outer harbour in Cockburn Sound, the alternative preferred by Cockburn council, will prove more environmentally damaging than Roe 8 itself.

“When you look at the impact on the environmental areas surrounding the roads that would need to be widened – and take into account the impact on the houses that abut those roads – you see that the aggregated environmental cost of not building Roe Highway is far greater than the cost of building it,” Cr Aubrey said.

“On top of that, residents will be stuck in congested traffic in perpetuity, with no other viable way of getting out of the situation.

“Certainly building the outer harbour will alleviate the trucks which is dangerous traffic to be mixed with light traffic but the fact is what we are looking at is getting 80,000 vehicles off our roads altogether with the construction of Roe Highway, compared to just 5000 trucks that would be moved to the outer harbour.”

Doesn’t the Mayor want Fremantle to be like Copenhagen, well they are building a tunnel and new road to make their growing port more efficient.

The Northern Harbour Link or Nordhavnsvej is a 3km-long bypass road being built between Nordhavn and Helsingørmotorvejen (Elsinore Highway) at the north of Copenhagen, Denmark.

All the things the Perth freight link (PFL) was aiming to achieve Roe8 Roe9. Somehow the rest of the world can safely build tunnels through and under cities yet in Fremantle they think it’s to dangerous for our suburbs.
Fear mongering is rife with BS like alley through the valley, and politically driven groups like road to rail and re-think the link.
Showing why Fremantle is where it is, lingering with its lack of business and cities like Copenhagen thrive. I guess Copenhagen has enough real leadership to see vital infrastructure projects go ahead while Fremantle has carbon hybrid brad.
Copenhagen develops while protecting its identity culture and heritage keeping what makes Copenhagen, Copenhagen. While Freo just continually loses or drives out what makes Freo Freo.

Seems our Mayor wants to kill off the port as well, I wonder what developers will benefit from that? Fremantle is a port city its possibly the last area of real activity outside cafes left in Freo. But our Mayor looks set to finish that off as well. A great letter in the herald last week showing the continuous loses Fremantle has suffered under its current local government regime. Will the port be added to the loses Fremantle is suffering at the hands of our council?

Freo losing its character
ONCE again the headlines in the Herald (December 19, 2015) announce the demise of yet another piece of irreplaceable Fremantle culture, with the Markets bar joining the Deckchair Theatre, The Fly By Night, Kulcha and many other former icons of the city.
What will be left of old Fremantle after the council has turned the whole place over to developers? I fear not much: the Esplanade will have become a “park hub” — whatever that may be — open to both community and commercial activities and if the past is anything to go by the latter will hold sway.

Lesser of 2 Evils Roe 8 or the Outer Harbour

Seems Fremantle’s Mayor Brad Pettitt has had his crystal ball out again as he was reported in the West Australian that the Outer Harbour project has the broad community support, using his magical gift of knowing what the silent majority is thinking or maybe I missed his community engagement survey he conducted on this subject?

Strangely enough a Cockburn Councilor ran a strong campaign in support of Roe 8 and got elected in his ward in the last local election. I wonder if Brad was taking into consideration communities like this, or maybe their POV doesn’t count if it differs from his?

Reading Peter Newman’s comments on the decade old plan for Lat 32, it sounds like he plans it to be the replacement for Kewdale as an inter-modal area. So does that mean everything gets trucked from Kwinana that sounds like a lot more truck miles than the current scenario? Not to mention without Roe 8 how does Brad and peter intend all the trucks to get to Canningvale a huge industrial area, Ranford Rd is a single lane road in parts.

Amazing and Newman thinks you can build the outer harbour with little infrastructure, brad sees no reason for land infill? It’s amazing it will be like a MacGyver port. Places like Singapore have spend decades planning their new ports, Billions of $$ on infrastructure, if only they had Brad or Peters mobile number they could have had it done years earlier and for a fraction of the cost.

All that said they still didn’t deal with the current traffic congestion for Fremantle or the fact the number of trucks coming out of the port even with the new harbour will still increase. Great to see the Mayor Fremantle, solving issues for Cockburn and Kwinana but still hasn’t addressed the Freo issues, perhaps that’s why Fremantle is still on its downward slope?

So which is worse for the Environment a bridge over the Beeliar Wetlands or Dumping 10’s of thousands of Tonnes of infill into Cockburn sound?

Each has separate issues though as we saw in Queensland last week when a train derails the impact can be massive.

If the health of the wetland is such a major concern why would they want to open it up to the possibility of what we saw in Queensland this week?

When trains crash they crash big, at least with trucks the size of the disaster is limited.
I wonder if all the people in Kwinana and those living side by side to km’s of rail track realize the potential size of a disaster if a train derailed in our suburbs some up to a 100 carriages long.

The picture from google earth shows the rail line running between the Samuel Carpon Reserve and the Beeliar Regional Park both with large wetlands, then into the suburbs that runs alongside Bibra lake road.


As the train/rail track from Kwinana runs through suburbs and along side the hotly contested Beeliar wetlands, I wonder what damage a derailment of this magnitude would do to the critical wetlands, 10’s of thousands of litres of toxic chemicals in one hit, dumped into the ground around Bibra Lake? .
Makes the road impact look insignificant.

Up to 31,500 litres of sulphuric acid has possibly leaked…
