Interesting to read the comments on Freoview today in regards so the blog post titled.

FREMANTLE CITY REINVENTING THE PORT DEVELOPMENT WHEEL

No surprise that commentators, comments actually disagree with the point they are trying to make. Stating that modern ports don’t need to be as large as they used to be contridict the point they make later about having to built a new port to cater for expansion.

Fremantle port can dispense allot more TEU’s than it does now, but it is restricted with its trucks movements as not to flood the local road network with trucks, jamming the entire local network making its decades out dated road network completely congested.

What the new port crowd will not tell is about ports that are completely residential locked and with no space to expand, are they moving as the anti-port crowd wants for Freo, of course not they are mechanizing, becoming more efficient and investing in technology and infrastructure , something that Fremantle council fights constantly against.

Here is a couple of quotes from Fobres magazine April 2016 on the 2nd busiest container port in Europe with over 40,000 TRUCK movements a day. Europe use trucks for port and container movements, you wouldn’t believe it with all the anti-truck & car crap you hear from a select elite self appointed  few in Fremantle.

“The Port of Hamburg is the second busiest container port in Europe, and is a key trade lane connecting Eastern Europe to Germany and the rest of the world. The HPA is in charge of providing efficient infrastructure in the port area: managing the real estate; making sure quay walls, bridges, wharves and other waterfront structures are maintained, maintaining 140 kilometers of roads and 130 bridges within the port area, and managing the traffic,

Over 9 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) are transported through the port every year, and this is forecast to double by 2025. But the Hamburg Port is located in an urban area and they cannot increase the size of the port to handle increased traffic. To handle shipments efficiently, the HPA must operate smarter. Better traffic management also helps to minimize pollution. The port and city are impacted by up to 40,000 truck trips daily and no one wants those trucks spending a high amount of time idling.”

European port can you believe, the statistics, nothing like the BS we here from the anti establishment crowd, completely distorting the facts on what is going on overseas to suit their own personal and political agendas.

So the second biggest port in the EU.

  • 140kms of Roads
  • 130 bridges
  • Tunnels (can’t do that in Freo the world may end our suburb may fall into it. Strangely the rest of the worlds cities, have networks of tunnels under them, Freo we prefer, folklore over fact and evil tunnel stories to scare our kids with.)
  • Traffic management, not anti car as Freo council but management.
  • 9,000,000 TEUs movements, compared to Freo’s 700,000 a year, whats the difference, roads, tunnels, bridges, thousands of trucks infrastructure not quite the story painted by Freo’s anti car and truck political elite.
  • 40,000 truck visits a day, WHAT trucks in Europe ins’t it all on rail, powered by wind and solar power, you mean they use trucks running on diesel in the middle of residential area with a population of 1,700,000 people not quite the same as freo’s 30,000 is it.

Never let the facts get in the way of a bullshit story.

Fremantle Hacked, Don’t drink the coolaid Freo your getting a con j ob story from a few designed to scare the mass for their ideological purpose.

Oh and for container ships the draft is only one issue for efficient loading we need cranes that can get out to width of the vessel the draft is less important as thats more about harbour depth and dredging.

Its amazing how just one new crane in Freo about 2103 significantly increased the efficiency of Freo port operations. Imagine what 4 would do?

So why do we need a new port which would need the same new cranes anyway, oh right, they hate roads etc, they will have to build twice as much road space to make their new harbour work, plus new break-yards, and have freight travel twice the distance, all in the name of efficiency and pollution reduction.

LOL. Where does the BS stop.

Oh and all that development still leaves freo for freight, trucks, trains, and passenger vehicles numbers worse off after they only invest in the new harbour.

Make sense, NO, right so “Dont Drink the Coolaid”,  its all they are selling.

More pie in the sky spin from our Mayor Brad Pettitt

How many decades before such infrastructure could be built and with Fremantle’s geographical  location would it ever warrant such a development for the cruise ship industry, the state gov would need to get commitment from the cruise industry before developing such a place, to ensure it just didn’t become unused infrastructure.
Barnett has already said live export would move to the outer harbour once its built. So why is bringing this into his discussion as its moving anyway.

No need to move the car off load for RORO and double the distance for cars to be delivered to car yards, just make this part of the development.

The picture attached of Broadwater is hardly a good comparison as this area of the gold coast is all estuaries, mariners, beaches, residential development, leisure activities parks etc.

Not what fremantle harbour is, being active cargo port, narrow river mouth surrounded by concrete.


What escapes the Mayors grasp of reality or suits his latest agenda is without a proper road network how will the thousands of guests and crew, new residences, workers get in and out of the city area in a efficient manner.
He and his council have made our road system into a dogs breakfast with their Anti-car platform.
Not to mention he needs to remove the rail out of the way, as this will also be a problem for development of residential apartments with trains riding down the side of it with heavy freight rail at night. Which would just create another problem.

  • Sorts out the traffic problems,
  • Opens the north side of Freo up to more residential use and provides better access PT to new residents,
  • Opens north Freo back to the beach fronts,
  • Slashes traffic movements down Stirling Hwy
  • Cuts traffic of South st
  • Diverts, trucks off Hampton road heading south or north
  • Removes passengers vehicles from Fremantle who are only driving through to get somewhere else.
  • Opens up poor used land for better use in the north port side
  • Brings back a village feel to the Tydeman road precinct, well till Sullivans try’s to approve a 15 story building for it.
  • Lowers noise pollution
  • Makes our local roads safer
  • Lowers emissions to the local area, by taking away the stop start of heavy vehicles making them more efficient.
  • Opens up the heavy freight line running south of Freo back to PT (Public Tranport), linking the new developing suburbs to the rail stations, with rail cutting the need for people to park and ride in town.
  • Giving space for more cycle and pedestrian ways.
  • Opens the possibility to link the north lines PT rail to Freo in a circle line opening up direct PT rail to Cockburn and the Mandurah line also allowing a rail service with one change to the hospital and Murdoch.
  • All while keeping an operational port in town.
  • Improving Freo’s Green space and lowering the amount of concrete surface our council loves so much.

In case it’s escaped his attention the outer harbour is not planned to replace Fremantle port but be a spill over once Freo harbour/port reaches a cap which is higher than its current container movements right now.

Which will put more freight on rail without increasing the % moved on rail and will bring more container Trucks to our suburb as he was against the infrastructure that would have removed them. Being the PFL, Roe 8 or Roe 9 or which ever way its portrayed.

So too add to the congestion he proposed thousands more to come to work, in the city and more visitors while he wants NO new roads, while increasing freight rail through town, creating More division and social problems and less car parking.

Sounds like a recipe for disaster, but at least we have a rapid charging point for EV in town and guaranteed you can get pissed at a noisy concert right in the centre of a what was a quiet historic area of town, now  heavily used for residential.

Maybe that’s the plan with J-shed if the noise is loud enough from his approved, piss up concerts, it may drown out the noise from the trains.

Oh and Paul I think this is offering a solution while disagreeing with another POV, just in case you missed that point again.

If we look back a few years and refer to media reports, the city of Fremantle and its Mayor Brad Pettitt recognized or at least talk about the need for retail environment to improve in Fremantle, as we see in the Wests story below.

Sadly 6 years on things have only gotten worse.

Freo needs more people, shops: mayor

“Fremantle needs to renew itself as an economic centre by growing its population, bringing in more office workers and attracting a high-profile department store such as David Jones in order to boost its stagnating retail sector, according to the city’s mayor. “

Sadly the Mayor missed the other part needed, the one the council could have the most influence on the anti-social, issues, Graffiti problems, maintenance of the city control assets, the city has a bad parking image, so what has councils done, sell off more parking, plus removed more on street parking. Not to mention approving more office, business and residential projects all lacking in parking infrastuure, while whining about the poor retail situation Fremantle is in. Go figure they are not helping the situation.

So while other centres and expanding and are aggressively increasing their parking assets, freo’s regressing and selling off the parking it does control. Freo council is just anti-car, which will lead to anti growth.

Fremantle opposes Garden City plan

“The City of Fremantle says a plan to double the size of Garden City Shopping Centre flouts the guidelines and will siphon more retail from the port city and undermine its efforts to establish a key economic centre. “

So while other centres are going, Fremantle is reaching for Kleenex to cry about others doing their jobs while they continue on the blind campaign running Freo’s opportunities  further into the ground.

Garden City to double floor space

“Garden City shopping centre at Booragoon will become the retail heart of a restaurant, entertainment, commercial and higher-density residential precinct under plans endorsed by the WA Planning Commission.

An expansion to make the shopping centre WA’s biggest is just one plank in a broader city centre overhaul that includes the development of a new high street and piazza, a revamped cinema complex and the introduction of small bars and restaurants intended to draw people to the area outside shopping hours.”

So now it will not be long before new bars and restaurant takes over from Freo as a night time entertainment district. As long as they (Melville) controls anti-socials issues, benefits like massive free parking and the ability to shop, go for dinner and park once, is a win win for Booragoon and lose lose, sadly for Fremantle.

When Councillors have attitudes like we see from Andrew S comments on Roels Freo View, it doesn’t bode well for Freo’s future.

In essence, you pay for parking at Booragoon through the shop till rather than in the car park. In a diverse and complex city centre, that opportunity really doesn’t exist even through the rate system. Paid parking is adopted as a more direct and equitable user-pays system.”

A simple example of the inaccuracy of such statements is going to a place like the coffee club in freo or Garden city where you would see the price is the same at both locations, no extra charge at Booragoon because parking is free. No to mention all the other added benefits of booragoon

  • Better ambiance with much less anti-social issues
  • Close to the Freeways, Canning Hwy, leach Hwy, Roe Hwy, easy enter and exit in your drive in and out
  • Bus Terminal hub
  • Air-condition shopping experience from top to bottom,
  • No crossing streets, or dodging cyclists and skaters, etc, safely navigating with the kids with less to worry about
  • No druggies and drunks laying in the centre of the shopping trip.
  • No parking tickets for being back to your car, when your a minute late from your max parking time of 30mins
  • No caught in the heat or rain
  • ETc, etc.

Sadly Freo over the last decade has only gone down hill, both  state and federal governments have done little for Freo over the same time. Not much interest from our local members either who seem more interested in events outside our city than what is happening too it. When the state has tried to give needed infrastructure its met with councils protesting, spending thousands of dollars on meaningless reports, to object to simple needed infrastructure like roads to ease congestion in and around the city. More interested in driving political party rhetoric than amenity of its residents.

Hence Fremantle is where it is and sadly little sign that recover is coming as other centres surge ahead and fremantle is moving backwards.

HUGE URBAN DEVELOPMENT POTENTIAL FOR FREMANTLE | Freo’s View

My thoughts on Roel post on his blog, my family live in this area so i think i have quite a good understanding of what locals think, i don’t know anyone who owns there own home in the area that wants high density or large apartment blocks. the area has been plagued with anti-social issues, drug dealing and petty crime and vandalism. History from the world tells us that the higher the density the worse the problem. We have a council that drives this high density but as best i know most of them live in houses with yards, garages, drive ways etc, not the they preach how everyone should live.

Roel the community in Blinco St are galready up in-arms about development just across the road as their homes/houses where getting two story in front of them. Not to mention the street already has huge parking issues. So how you think that 8 stories is OK I have no idea.

The area has a mountain of homes West housing just up the street, just over in Beaconsfield is a whole lot more, known as the Beacy Broncs, also well known for massive police raids and a continually hot bed of trouble, petty crime home invasions, vandalism graffiti and intimation to those who call the authorities to complain. Across the road on the northern side of High St is a heap more.

Just up the Hill from this area going East, they have over a couple of years homes demolished, Homes West houses, which were also well known for drug dealing hot spots and domestic violence.

I was standing alongside Steve Grant when he took the photo at this community group meeting, 6 or 7 mins walk from the place your article is referring too. Again lots of promises at the this meeting about actions the council was going to take, (possibly as it was just before an election) now the election has past, action seems pretty much nothing on the  issue.

Fremantle already has a higher than average % of homes west than the average suburb and needs no more. Just 2 weeks ago we see cars torched at the cold store area as drug dealing issues come to the front in homes west houses again.

We shouldn’t even need to mention the traffic issues in the area as both High St and Stevens St have traffic issue leaving the valley on Steven St at both ends is already dangerous with dumb design on Hampton Rd and the council ignoring a decade of complaints about the other end on Carrington where you have to blindly out onto a major rd.

South St has its own set of problems and the High St intersection with Stirling Hwy is another traffic black spot, well known for accidents and is full of trucks from the port as it’s the major route out.

The local primary school is full, past capacity with transportable units on the school oval. The Kim Beazley site is yet to have single resident move in, which is set to add 100’s more on just one block, in the middle of the mess I have just mentioned

And you think adding thousands on more people into a suburb area in high rises to create future slums is a good idea?

You may not have noticed but people who spend millions on penthouses don’t like the idea of a possible drug dealer or meth lab on the ground floor under their penthouse, having to rely on the roll of the dice you get from homes west.

High density in this area would be a disastrous outcome for what was another leafy green suburb, rapidly being destroyed by a political motivated councils density drive which is destroying our tree canopy and massively increasing our urban heat sink

I have been to places our Mayor  Brad Pettitt wants to mimic like Malmo, I have friends from there and outlaying districts all have seen their amenity deteriorating, as Malmö has become a centre for crime, violence, drug dealing and organized crime.

Not exactly what I would like to see copied into Freo we have enough shit as it is.

Is Fremantle on its way back from the brink? Domain missing the main points

Once recognized as Western Australia’s thriving, cosmopolitan second city, many of Fremantle’s retailers and small business owners have been struggling to stay afloat in recent years but the winds of change are in the air.

The first issue is what took Freo to the brink in the 1st place? Is it back, I don’t think so?

The so called anti-development did not drive out all the businesses and cause all the “For Lease” signs across the city. Protecting heritage is essential as its one of the things that makes Freo unique.

The loss of many key Fremantle icons and draw cards are at the heart of what killed Freo, or is still killing it.

To say not building a new office block or apartment is killing the city is not true, if it was then many old historical cities would have died off instead they thrive. Taking what they have, working with, protecting it, maintaining it and using them to drive their cities forward.

If Freo can make the top 10 places on Lonely Planet to visit it wasn’t talking about new hi-rises, or the Mayors drive for development at any cost, as most of the new stuff we see going up is pretty tacky. Of course there is some great stuff coming online as well.

Freo’s real decline is seen in the loss of places like Myers, the Dockers, the deal for oval has just inept, the decline of places like Fly by Night.

How many of these types of business, has the council seen go under in its time?

Then there is Freo’s shocking reputation for parking and its councils anti-car policies it’s driving constantly.

Freo’s even worse reputation for anti-social issues. Business and locals have been complaining about this for years its only just recently the council has woken from their slumber on this issue, of course we have the likes of wainwrights and his socialist buddies, who seem more worried about the druggies, vagrants, anti-social drunken crew, the vulgar language etc, etc. Than he is on the ones who pay the rates to fund the cities, councilor driven ideology, oh and pay the fees, that puts in his pocket. Of course it’s all the state governments fault not the city’s councilors and Mayor who have made these issues worse. Amazing how the Mayor of Perth clean up these issues in Perth, yet our Mayor and councillors laid out the carpet for it now they are trying to pull it back. 1-step forward, 2 steps back.

The Mayor Brad Pettitts drive for bigger and bigger booze events and venues where in some cases he gives away the space to the operator for free, letting local rate payers foot the bill the repair bills. Of course the bigger the booze event the more anti-social problems?

To show the hypocrisy the councils wants to have some sort of drive for stamping out domestic violence, yet on the other continues to drive bigger and bigger booze based events and business, it’s just laughable, you will see Wainwright talk about all these issues but vote for a massive booze sponsored event on south beach.

HILTON councillor Sam Wainwright says his council probably erred by keeping locals in the dark over its plans for Warrawee women’s refuge.”

Again they talk about transparency yet vote to close the door on it.

ZERO-TOLERANCE FOR BEGGING ‘FLAWED’

“Fremantle mayor Brad Pettitt is on record claiming police research had identified many beggars in the city aren’t homeless.

But when the Herald checked the research, it didn’t back up Dr Pettitt’s claim.”

2nd worse place in Australia for coverage of concrete and bitumen in a city, our councils lust for pouring concrete into our parks.

Fremantle’s councils drive to call graffiti art giving our once great city its ghetto look.

The cities lack of focus on basic maintenance our town hall on the verge of ruin if basic gutter and rood repairs are not done.

Hi-rise development for offices and apartments are not what makes a city great, of course I don’t expect anyone profiting of this to agree as its their pockets the money flows too. As long as its all honest and above board nothing wrong with that but don’t kid yourself that a developer has the best interest  of the city at heart, that’s like thinking a mining company has best interest of the environment in their mind 1st and fore most. No its about $$$$ the bottom line.

Another piece of journalism written with COF issued blinkers, I wonder if the Mayor gets to proof read these before they go to press?

The picture in the piece is one of the Mayors white elephants, the Kings Square Business Plan and issue that has been questioned in parliament and a minister responsible refuses to even give it due scrutiny. Google this and list of questions is endless, a project that could cost the Fremantle rate payers over $30,000,000.00

People investing like to see a steady reliable record of operation before investing in a location, the back flipping policies and style of council hardly sends that message.

The last survey report of the rate payers in Fremantle shows a city at its lowest point in history. the reputation it has for graffiti is shocking.

The recent election show’s them having their lowest vote turn out in history and more than 54% of the votes cast in the election for non sitting councillors, a clear majority that voted aren’t happy with the current direction.

All these issues are what’s killing freo, building a few new offices isn’t going to fix these problems. It would be great if it could.
