No Majors for Fremantle

We see in the Herald again the state of Fremantle and its constantly demising situation with business and retail in town.

This week we read in the Herald that Coles is near to the end of its lease.

coles-and-woolies-no-freo-down-down-down-v1

Woolies is already gone, so if Coles goes that will leave Fremantle the second city in W.A. after Perth without  a major supermarket. Possibly the only city in Australia with out a major supermarket, it would be another first for Mayor Brad.

Myers gone for more than 3 yrs and the place is still vacant, Kings Sq business plan keeping the CBD dead, at its heart. Well apart from the drunks and druggies, their dealers, the vagrants, beggars.and all of the rest of the people who seem to form there sadly giving Freo its  anti-social  reputation. This is a big killer for tourism as well. The history side has so much to offer but that is also being destroyed with issues like J-shed, showing the council complete lack of respect for this natural business/tourism draw of the Round House, Fremantle’s history and architecture

This council has seen many major retailers leave the city of the last decade or so.

  • Myer
  • Harvey Norman
  • Spotlight,
  • Dymocks
  • Gloria Jeans
  • Angus & Robertson
  • Thingz Gifts
  • Dick Smith
  • McDonald’s
  •  plus so many other retailers too numerous to list.

COLES NEAR END OF LEASE

Fremantle Myer’s $30m makeover will ‘rival’ Claremont Quarter

Here we see the importance the mayor put on keeping Myers,

“Mr Pettit said the Myer building make-over would be the catalyst for the city’s rejuvenation.

“I hope it will really start the rejuvenation of retail in Fremantle as an eclectic centre,” he said.

“It’s looking a bit tired and rundown and in need of a face lift. This will start it off.”

A bit scary if he thought the place was tired and rundown then, what does he think it is now, not to mention the for Lease signs dotted all over the city. Here he see the Myers significance, when they go oh well, we don’t need them they are not so important, 3 yrs later, much bigger impact losing them, seemingly he  just has  no idea and flip flops back forth to which ever situation he finds himself in.

Now we see another icon gone from Freo if Mills leaves. THE FUTURE of one of the oldest record shops in Fremantle is in doubt.

MILLS TO GO?

I would ask when do we think he will wake up to reality, but from this spin doctor, I would say never.

Then we see a letter also in the Herald setting a few facts straight for council on a number of issues, including the fact Freo is dying in Front of them and they are more interested in playing their political games than ensuring Fremantle decline is brought to a halt and it can reestablish its self to its former glory, ie before they started screwing things up

Heres the letter from the herald, Highlight a few bits that people have been saying for years about this Mayor and his Merry band.

Australia Day not about racism
I should like to reply to Councillor Wainwright’s tirade in last week’s Thinking Allowed (“It takes a wilful ignorance,” Herald, September 24 2016).
But first would like to assure Councillor Wainwright that the sting most certainly hasn’t gone out of the debate about the Fremantle council decision to cancel the Australia day celebrations, and take this opportunity to remind him, that he and the other Fremantle Councillors, were elected to serve and represent the residents of Fremantle and not so they had a forum or stage to spout their own politically correct opinions.
How dare this man compare “unfavourably” Australia to other countries who have far-far less liberal views than ours. Despite both Cr Wainwright and Mayor Pettitt’s denials that their decision wasn’t [motivated by] political correctness, the decision to cancel the very popular Australia Day fireworks is of course nothing less than political correctness gone mad.
Despite this council’s claims to have attracted new business to Fremantle, under Mayor Pettitt’s leadership the opposite has been the case with many large retailers, including a cinema and Woolworths, upping stakes and leaving Fremantle, the old Myer building, empty for years, remains empty, with Mayor Pettitt being forced to go cap in hand to the State Government for help in finding a tenant—none of Mayor Pettitt’s boasts about various hotels opening have eventuated. Many old established business have, through lack of trade, been force to close their doors.
The council’s latest decision to cancel Australia Day will do nothing to improve this sad situation, nor will Mayor Pettitt’s claim to replace Australia Day with an “amazing” celebration. The politically correct decision by Fremantle council to cancel the popular Australia Day will not be followed by the rest of the nation because Australia Day is not, never has been, never will be about race or racism: It is a celebration that Aussies of all colours, creeds, religious and political persuasions can, and have, enjoyed for years.
One of the reasons given for cancelling Australia Day was they couldn’t justify spending $130,000 on a firework display, but the council’s decision to spend millions on upgrading/rebuilding the Town Hall seemed to them is perfectly reasonable?
The decision taken by the majority of Fremantle councillors proves beyond doubt that they have not only lost touch with the average Fremantle resident, but have also lost their trust and the only honourable thing for them to do is resign. In this writer’s opinion it’s a shame that we haven’t some kind of financial recourse from these councillors for the damage they have done.
Finally might I suggest if Fremantle council are truly interested in attracting new business and tourists to Fremantle they come out from the plush offices and do something about the drunks, drug takers/sellers and layabouts who are increasingly frequenting our streets.

Many in Freo can see the problems sadly our council is just out of touch.

Fremantle Council Shambles Continue

shambles

Amazing our council seems to know how to consistently make contracts that actually screw up the cities ability to move forward.

Council has made lemons out of deal after deal.

Kings Square business plan has kept the CBD dead (apart from the drunks, dregs and druggies) for over 3yrs now, first they screwed up by letting Myers leave then the Mayor, Brad Pettitts clanger of a Kings Square Business Plan.

He was warned by an ex mayor don’t do it, professional staff (that left) said the same. Members of the Community tried to raise questions, but where publicly vilified for it. Fremantle Society raised questions never got answers, several community groups fared no better. a Politician asked questions in Parliament the Minister pretty much ignored them. Financial specialists, with a puissance for this sort of financial application, have raised serious questions in the both the outcome and methodology of the so call business plan. Councillors have been written too as individuals asking direct questions of the procedure and their understanding of the outcome and their responsibilities in this chain of council decisions, that started back in 2012.

All this and they blissfully carried on with our piped piper leading them down the path, the only councillor who showed an ounce of free will was ex councillor Bill Massie and his replacement since. All of this leading to a possible $50,000,000.00 loss for the ratepayers.

Then the shocker of deal with the Dockers, leaving the council with a vacating footie team who has the ground locked  for peanuts, for decades, our councillors showing yet again their financial acumen. Rate payers screwed yet again.

Giving away the Esplanade for next to free for a select group. Another bill for the rate payers to cover.

Anyone wondering why we see our rates rise the way they do????

Then we see another couple of sweet deals for the a couple of groups at the old naval stores, somehow this group get an amazingly cheap deal and have the ability to sublease out space to profit on something they are killing time with. How this is a positive outcome for Freo is beyond me.

Then we come round to a deal which seems to have been a pet project for the mayor as he rode it pretty hard. Including a more than smoke screen of a farce community engagement, which went 180 degrees opposite to what the community groups came up with. Again community groups raised a whole range of objections, now seemingly mostly if not all justified, as the Mayor and co, completely ignored community objections and concerns and just did want they felt like.

So what we have again is another divide in our community, modeled by council and another part of our town left de-activated; this time for how long as we wait to see how our our council sorts another self made mess.

How many different spaces in the Queensgate centre are being used by groups who are paying well below market rate if anything at all, who are they and what connections do they have to our current council? What else is the rate payer funding, that they have no idea about.

The WAPC  finding a pretty much given for Freo,

  • Use of land reserved for parks & recreation, regional open space was not as specified and the plan Brad drove so hard for did not comply with intended use of such a reserve, oh yes the community did raise that, another thing he ignored.
  • Wait for it; the proposal did not have sufficient car-parking, right how many times was that mentioned? that’s pretty much a staple for our anti-car council.
  • Didn’t comply with the local planning for Fremantle
  • Had a negative impact on local residences and other businesses.
  • Didn’t comply with the COF own West-end policy.
  • They missed, it went against COF own Alcohol policy
  • There is a few more apart from their other stupid ideas, of using whalers tunnel, or the bike path to set up the events if FPA blocked use of the road.
  • Not to mention pissing off the local business and pretty much looked they were trying to drive them out?
  • FPA against the  proposal
  • Setting up a massive booze barn across from a TAFE.
  • It just goes on and on.

Even better when we see the WAPC ruling coming out, wheres our Mayor, oh yes off jet-setting overseas, increasing his carbon-footprint and now the proverbial is going down in freo, over councils latest cock-up, he’s off on his Holidays, leadership at its most. Possible a good plan overseas, let the heat die down, and hold another love in about small apartments that heat off their own poo.

So we see Roel ( J SHED INCOMPETENCE A WORRY FOR KINGS SQUARE ) coming out all guns blazing on the professional staff and fair enough, how did they let all that go by? Still he did not once call to account our Mayor or Councillors, whom were the ones to finally vote to allow this debacle to happen in the 1st place. Hes not publishing any council facts/critics now days, so another place council gets a walk.

I would ask another question, is this professional body that incompetent or is it a group that is ridden rough shot over and told what to do or what outcomes will be, to suit a certain person and his personal agenda?

Isn’t this why the final decisions rests with people who are so called representatives of the city residents and ratepayers or electors, our councillors and Mayor right, isn’t this what they get paid for ?

In these cases you have to ask who’s best interests were they taking care of, from the outcomes so far it doesn’t look like the old electors are faring to well?

It was great to see the CCC’s recommendation for the Auditor general office to get some oversite of local council.

Its fair to say many in the freo community would be happy to see the auditors general popping into freo any day real soon.

a

shambles.

Its a horror movie

Greens for trees | Fremantle Herald Interactive, But their actions tell another story

THE Greens are promising to double Fremantle’s tree canopy by 2040 under an “urban forest” plan. Freo council has already adopted a policy to increase the dire coverage of trees over barren streets…

Source: Greens for trees | Fremantle Herald Interactive

Where’s the Trees, where’s the Green?

Words are one thing all politicians are good at, action is another thing completely.

The Fremantle Council has a few greens on it and currently Fremantle has the 2nd worst hard surface amount in WA, according to the 202020, report.

Since that report was done we have seen the Esplanade Concreted over, worsening that particular situation.

We have seen the majority of these councilors; approve a plan that cut down 100+ mature trees in White Gum Valley on the Old Kim Beazley site.

They also did not demand that the developer give the necessary 10% additional open public space as is normal with these developments, instead allowed them to use the public space that was already there. So the developer could get in more small blocks adding more concrete and hard surface covering.

Then we see the Burt St development went down a similar path with council again not stipulating the required 10% open public space, again allowing more concrete more hard surface covering.

We see this council with all these Fremantle council members most of houses, driving for smaller and small blocks, higher R-codes, high density, more med high rise development, which leads to more and more trees being cut down.

Again we see the Concrete from our green council pouring into our parks so they build basketballs on park land which Fremantle already in short supply.

Most councils in the world supply similar services to their residents, sporting areas are great. What most councils with an ounce of common sense do is invest that money into areas that are run down or poorly utilized, in disrepair etc, to build these public services. Not Fremantle council they go straight for the park land and trees, pouring in the concrete.

Then we see more concrete coming down a Port beach with the new flow rider system, more open land for concrete.

We see in a report last year that over 90% of new trees planted by councils don’t make, so for even the ones that do we have to wait 2 decades to see some benefit from them. You think that would make the existing trees even more precious, well I guess not for Freo council.

So when they say they will improve the tree canopy to double by 2040, I see they didn’t make a note of what the coverage is presently, so we are clear from what point we are starting from. Otherwise just expect more of our Mayors unique smoke and mirrors, slide of hand. Also not clarified is whether, Fremantle’s means the CBD, the greater city of Fremantle, the State Electoral boundaries, or the Federal election boundaries

We have many of these councilors and mayor for a decade now, yet still our tree canopy shrinks.

So with it taking at least 20 yrs. to get a tree and its canopy established , all going well, that means  for the Greens to succeed they would have to double all the trees currently in Fremantle, have them all survive and grow above the roof line of houses to be considered a canopy.

That’s a bit hard when the greens on council are hell bent on density, which now is just clearing blocks removing everything just to squeeze as many dwellings as possible.

Then we have the Councils drive for urban rail and the route the Mayor and his team are taking that will be hundred’s more trees cut down to facilitate that.

Then we have the ever increasing amount of containers coming from the Fremantle port even if the Outer Harbour is built, and of course our council has objected to that too. Instead building the massive Lat 32 which adds 140 km2’s of hard coverage to Cockburn and destroying any tree canopy there too. So it’s hard to see how they will double tree canopy when the Fremantle Council supported policy is to build the biggest industrial park in Australia.

So actions speaking louder than words, it’s a fairly pie in the sky promise, which should have its intended action of rallying a few voters for the green cause and have its disciples sprouting the virtues of the Green Dogma, while its agents at Council, keep driving up the R-zoning clearing more trees, and laying more concrete. Going in the opposite direction of the said promise, only to blame, capitalists, Tony Abbott or conservatives about the evil ways when in fact it looks like the greens are just showing their hypocrisy yet again.

What is Urban Tree Canopy?

Urban tree canopy (UTC) is the layer of leaves, branches, and stems of trees that cover the ground when viewed from above. In urban areas, the UTC provides an important storm water management function by intercepting rainfall that would otherwise run off of paved surfaces and be transported into local waters though the storm drainage system, picking up various pollutants along the way. UTC also reduces the urban heat island effect, reduces heating/cooling costs, lowers air temperatures, reduces air pollution, increases property values, provides wildlife habitat, and provides aesthetic and community benefits such as improved quality of life.

Urban Bush land Council’s Mary Gray agreed that more trees were needed in metropolitan areas,,,

“Unfortunately, they tend to bulldoze the whole landscape instead of looking at what’s there and then building in amongst it.

“It seems crazy to wipe the whole lot out.”

Killing the Great Australian Dream – Limit urban sprawl, says Freo mayor Brad Pettit – The West Australian

Amazing similarities between Barnett and Pettitts policy and agenda,,,,,, Speak with your feet | Fremantle Herald Interactive

Amazing similarities between Barnett and Pettitts agenda, controlling how you live

Barnett’s laws are part of a growing trend of legislation that undermines civil rights.

Source: Speak with your feet | Fremantle Herald Interactive

Amazing that the greens candidate brings up this issue, well not really hypocrisy could be considered policy for many of them? anyway while the greens candidate for Fremantle is complaining against a bill to become law that stops protesters from interfering with people going about their lawful activity. Its not against protesting its self, just about protesters interfering with other peoples lawful activity. Seems reasonable to me.

Anyway while she is protesting and writing about Barnett’s interfering with peoples rights, her green party members on council are doing the same thing with how people live. Our Mayor in Freo Brad Pettitt wants to limit the size of the house you can build on your own block, while he is driving sub-division at the same time hes got other plans up his sleeve that will effect your family rights in Fremantle.

Things like one car per house, banning street and verge parking encouraging development in town with out adequate if parking? What effect will this have on your investment? When streets are packed with people cars who’s apartments don’t have a car parking space. Long term it will have a negative impact on growth for these properties, especially when every where else is ensuring adequate parking space. This is WA a state bigger than western europe.

So while the greens candidates is complaining about a law that will really only effect the professional protesters and their activities to stop businesses going about their lawful activity, the Mayors Plan will impact how your family life at home 24/7, 365 days a year.

Now that’s worth protesting about.

Fremantle Mayor Still in Denial? as,,,,, Woolies exits | Fremantle Herald Interactive

WOOLWORTHS in Fremantle will close at the end of the month. Staff were told last week the shutters on the Adelaide Street store will pull down for the last time on May 27. A dwindling customer base…

NO Surprise at all to see Fremantle Mayor Brad Pettitt, quoted in the media again.

“Mayor Brad Pettitt says the city will not try to persuade Woolworths to stay: “I would have liked it to stay, but it does not have the same strategic value as a store like Myer does,” he says. “Woolworths has always been in a strange location in Fremantle.”

In 2012 the Mayors very astute business acumen  had him quoted as saying -Myer leaving is not the end of the world, King Sq will still go ahead. – Really Mayor perhaps you should walk down the steps from your chambers and see the state of our once great citys CBD and Kings Square, was this your plan?

A place surrounded by vacant and struggling business, a city with a shocking reputation for anti-social behaviour, a rising crime rate, the few shoppers  left harassed by drunks, druggies, beggars while walking thru graffiti,  vandalized streets and still a shocking reputation for parking. Considering the amount of car-parking you have sold off and plan to sell if you get a chance its not surprising, not to mention your infatuation of turning street parking into waste of space parklets, but does also possibly feeds your love for concrete.

4 years later, in 2016 the situation is worse and still sliding, Woolies a tribute to that, the Mayors plan is clearly not working., if he has one at all?

The Hilton development delay ( or if its built at all) bares testament to that.
