FREMANTLE LIGHTRAIL NOT A PIPE DREAM, it could be a nightmare for locals residents and businesses

Will this be a bigger impact on the fremantle community, than roe 9 tunnel??????????

Fremantle residents need to ensure they ask Fremantle council the right questions with our politically motivated ideological driven council on the drive for their latest scenario.

This would appear to make Fremantle Councils light rail more destructive to Fremantle than the Roe 9 tunnel.  All the verge trees and many in peoples front yards would need to be cut down, or cleared to make way for Rachel’s Pemberton’s Light Rail Future.

  • How many families would have their  homes on South St impacted?
  • How many businesses would need to knocked down to make way for the new rail line?
  • How much of their blocks will be reclaimed for the new verges area?
  • All the big pine trees on South St before Carrington St would need to go.
  • About 80 trees between Carrington St and Stock St would need to go.
  • The impact east of Stock Rd could also be huge if over head power is needed, with many old large trees could over hang the power system.
  • How will this effect the value of all homes along South St especially those close to road with added rail noise and vibration. Wheel squeal and flanging noise are often causes of annoyance to residents as the high pitch screeching is mainly found at the high frequency end of the human audible noise spectrum?
  • Now its been made so public will real estate agents now have to warn prospective buyers of the developments the council is driving for.
  • Now the Councillor has come out and spoken about it so publicly, what impact could this have on Trans Perth not prioritizing new bus routes or possible rapid bus transit lanes, which TP development speaks of?
  • The months of turmoil on people and businesses while South St is dug up and the new infrastructure is put in place?
  • Worse, no road reserve is noted for the final leg to Fremantle, so who’s street could it drive through and what is the impact on loss of homes and businesses to for fill their ideology? Leaving years of uncertainly for local families
  • This is just the start of the questions of the impact that such a project could have.
  • Will council make this projects impact clear to all residents and businesses impacted by their new rail line before the next election, or will this get another dose of spin, smoke and mirrors.
  • Would Roe 9 have removed many vehicles off south st if council had engaged in a positive contribution to this project instead of the negative one
  • Is this just another council drive to lift the R zoning, killing off our urban canopy and adding to their anti-car campaign.

The devastation on an old established suburb will be huge by driving a light rail system through these old heritage area.

Fremantle Council Only Green in Politics

Its quite sad that we have a Greens political driven council yet over the last 8-10 years our parks and Tree canopy and has suffered at their hands and has gotten worse across the board.

Research reveals Perth’s hottest real estate… in terms of tree canopy.

  • Fremantle has the 2nd worse Metro Tree Canopy in WA, now shown to have direct negative health issues.
  • Fremantle has the second worse hard surface covering in Australia, according to the 202020 study
  • Fremantle council has approved to concrete over parts of the esplanade reserve, replacing grass with concrete, how this suits a green plan I have no idea.
  • Fremantle council has plans to approve more buildings for Princess park, more concrete to replace grass and cutting down more mature trees.
  • Fremantle council has approved plans to build on and fence part of an A class reserve at J-Shed, turning over public space for private companies to profit off.
  • Fremantle council has more plans approved for more concrete for the esplanade reserve, maybe they should call it Fremantles grey plan, not green plan
  • Fremantle council has approved plans to concrete grass areas at south beach, again more concrete to replace grass.
  • Fremantle council approved plans to cut down 100+ mature trees at Kim Beazley, which will take decades to replace and thousands of tonnes of additional water with possibly a 30 % of trees that are planted that will not survive. Leaving this area with lost tree canopy for decades.
  • Fremantle council approved plans for the Kim Beazley site not to have the additional 10% open public space.
  • Fremantle council approved a plan for the green fill site @Burt St to ramp up zoning to over R100, with no need to supply the required 10% open public space again.
  • Plan to flatten 100’s of homes and cut down all the trees on South st to build their light rail.

So from all this, we should believe they give a damn about open public space, parks and the tree canopy of our suburbs?

I know I  have raised these points before but as council consistently says it cares about, open space, tree canopy etc, but its actions tell another story completely.

Remember don’t just believe what council says but look at their actions as it tells a different story.

Since the 202020 report was done, in Fremantle hard surface has increased and tree canopy has got worse. That’s just in 2 years under a council driven by green politics. So since our mayor brad pettitt and many of the current councillors have on council, our tree canopy has got worse and hard coverage has increased, leaving Fremantle in current,  2nd worse rating in Australia.

They drive their own politic ideology not the resident’s best interests. Politics 1st people later.

I understand the South St reserve link (Intramaps)is not quite working as I would like so here is a screen shot of what I was intending to show from intramaps. Now this is an indication of a reserve set aside some time ago and is not complete for the rail system to be built, so it would need to be expanded. Of course to see the full impact of how the reserve would impact homes an actual detailed plan would be needed. Not to mention the cycle paths they would want, car lanes and buses.

The Red line running down South St shows the properties impacted. Also allowing for the expansion west of the road reserve to Fremantle to allow the light rail to be added.

Mark McGowan touts ‘metro hubs’ plan for Perth.

Hasn’t this idea been around for decades, I seem to recall it was a big issue back in the early to mid-90’s? I thought the government had a report made back in the 50’s that talked about a similar concept?

I was glad to read a comment reportedly from Mr McGowan “It’s not good enough to just whack down a block of units on a quiet suburban street and call it infill.” Cause that’s what places like Burt St are getting from the COF. No other infrastructure just a big lump of apartments with a huge R160 zoning. Isn’t that what the Kim Beazley site is getting not as dense but still out of character for the suburb? Isn’t that what’s planned for the Old Bunker site off Swanbourne St? There is no plans for services, PT, shops, retail, etc. certainly no light rail? Some aren’t even offering an additional 10% for open public space, to cater for the influx of people brought in by the infill. All this development  being driven by the COF with what seems to be none of the desired facilities/services mentioned in the article?

As the crow flies Fremantle is just under 15kms from Perth, it has a rail link, it has a bus hub, it has residential, and it has high-rise apartments, though its retail is dying. It has recreational activities, beaches, sporting clubs, parks, festivals, arts community. So Fremantle has all of the ingredients mentioned in the article, reported from Professor Newman, so what aren’t we flourishing?

Vegas knows a little about moving people

Areas like Booragoon have no light rail, no plans for light rail, no massive infill or high rises planned to the best of my knowledge. Though has plans to double its retail area, is attracting businesses with office space, but offers none of the key ingredients for success mentioned in the article (apart from free car parking and retail which seem to go hand in hand)?

Murdoch and Success seem to be thriving and going ahead in leaps and bounds, is that due to the rail going through the middle of their centres or is it also perhaps helped with a little 6 lane Freeway running alongside it? Small detail.

Further from reports that the government may be moving away from promised light rail in the northern suburbs due to a spiralling cost blow outs, does this not leave a massive hole in the FREO 2029 vision, just weeks after it came out? Without the light rail they dream about, no major business to employ all the people they wish to bring with their infill plans, housing diversity plan, new parking policy and one train line going north, will this vision have a chance? Where will all these people work and how will they get to their jobs. Will light rail solve the issue for parents dropping off kids at school and then shooting straight off to work and vise e versa for pickup time? It’s well and good to have a vision but when you are relying on a State Government to fund it that doesn’t seem to care about Freo, no matter which flavour is in, you could be dreaming?

Having lived in cities with light rail or undergrounds and great public transport systems, it’s easy to see the benefits of such a network. People’s lives are based around these networks. The challenge here is that people’s lives are based around the car or motorbikes, so the question is how much will people be happy to give up to use PT, how much will they be prepared to change in their lives to suit PT?     

Right now kids/teenagers are saving, thinking, dreaming about their 1st car, getting a license. I still recall staff I had working for me talk about getting their 1st car and the FREEDOM, they perceived it would give them, talk of servicing, insurance, repairs, new tyres, costs weren’t of interest to them. All they talked about was what it would allow them to have the freedom they wanted and for some of the girls the safety of not having to travel on PT. So good luck being the group that’s wants to take dreams from kids.

The other concern is that if all the infill and higher density comes, without the light rail and business/jobs how will the people living in these new carless environments get around. Further if jobs do come to town what’s the chance of people living close to work, it’s not like it was decades back when you could get a job for life and lived close by, with our transient employment style now, with companies, growing one day, downsizing the next, technology replacing workers, outsourcing, closing down and/or moving, promotions, job changes, etc. how do u plan to live close to where u work?

Finally Perth 9th most liveable city in the world things can’t be too bad here.
