Fremantle Councillors Hypocrisy on Advertising or are they just having laugh?

I recall about a year or so ago the pompous Superior attitude of the Fremantle  councillors. When the Fremantle Surf Life Saving Club (FSLSC) came before council to ask for permission for a few signs to generate much needed funds (sponsorship) to sustain the FSLSC operations which are extremely costly and considering that the COF contributes next to nothing for its operational costs each year. Now FSLSC had over 500 nippers last season, a great service and educational system for the area. I thinks its disgraceful that the COF doesn’t support such an Australian institution more.

Getting to the point of the post, COF lame ass operations aside. The council and especially some of its councillors speeches where pathetic and condescending to say the least. Their concern lay in the subject matter of advertising that would generate much needed funds for FSLSC. They where concerned that a Surf Life Saving Club may attract inappropriate sponsors like Coca Cola or McDonalds, our deputy Mayor Josh was worried about the ambiance, look or ugly advertising signs polluting our shoreline.  So massive signs, stories high inflatable beers bottles are good for beach ambiance but a mineral water ad at Leighton beach maybe 5ft high on a wall, would be a blight on the landscape. Seriously you couldn’t make this shit up.

Council like.

Sounds very superior right? Well you may be surprised that our council just approved for south beach an event Sponsored by Corona run by Sunset events.

Sound strange that our council thinks a major brewery product is more appropriate to make funds for a profit making company than coke is to generate sponsorship for a community service like a surf life saving club. Not that FSLSC was looking at coke its just that our councillors thought it appropriate to give the club its superior moral ground, funny right.

So today with Fremantle’s anti-social issues, Australia domestic violence issues, so bad  that bad our federal government has committed an additional $100 million dollars  to fight the issue and our council is promoting, booze barns, booze based businesses and alcohol based beach parties from its superior point of view. The rest of the country is battling to fight these issues and our council is promoting them and working to make our social issues worse.

Clearly council has quite strict standards for volunteer, community service organizations that help train 100’s of youth free of charge, for life skills, community service, health and well being and that make our beaches safer for the general public., but are fine for booze based groups to make money for profit how ever they please.

Sorry but that’s just pathetic. Tells a story about our council, what do u think?

Well I guess that Surf Life Saving Clubs don’t donate enough for electoral campaigns?

With domestic violence being front and centre in the media and community concern over the last year, alcohol being such a big contributor to the issue, Fremantle council is clearly out of touch with reality.

Glad to see Councillor Rachels ad says shes wants to work with the police on anti-social behaviour, she didn’t make it clear if she was working to make it  better or worse.

Council robbing the kids of the Aussie backyard experience.

A trend of smaller blocks,low-maintenance, designer backyards is robbing children of fun in the outdoors, a new book claims.

Good article based on a book from the CSIRO on the loss of the Aussie backyard.

garden backyard

The decreasing blocks and house sizes, design are robbing kids of growing up my generation did. Now the council wants to limit the space for cars, the old driveway was a great cricket pitch, hand ball court, learning to ride a bike. Big back yard big trees, great natural play space, natural cooling, place for animals to find shelter or food, its all pluses, now look what council is pushing.

back yard play

Kids playing in backyard

Councils drive for tiny blocks are taking away the safety of the old backyard where kids could play with less supervision, longer, healthier, more creative and safer.

Their high density ideology is no way for a kid to grow up, i just came back form Hong Kong, there is no way I would want to raise a family there.

”Up until the 1990s, Australian backyards were like what you saw in Neighbours, with swimming pools and barbecues,” Prof Hall said. ”That kind of suburb is not being built any more. Instead, people tend to extend the house over as much of the block they can.

”Everybody in Australia should be concerned about the health and lifestyle implications of this.”

Professor Hall said front gardens and parks are no substitute for backyards, where children can run unsupervised in safety.

He said smaller backyards also contributed to environmental degradation, with vegetation around the house acting to absorb rain and cool the climate in summer.

”Plants give off moisture, trees give off shade and it all adds to biodiversity and attracts birds and things. This being close to nature is important for enjoying your house, especially for children.”

Plant and trees like this  are not built on shoe box size blocks or in planter boxes on the 6 story of a container city.

Its quite clear our council ideology is bad for our families health and well being., Everyone around the Kim Beazley site will feel the extra heat this summer from council decision approving  its tree canopy to be wiped out.

Councillor Rachel’s small blocks, Mayors Brads Highrise, high density are no place for kids to play and are killing our way of life. Along with  all their tree clearing, concreting parks, its leaving a nasty future for our families. Leaving Fremantle with the 2nd worse tree canopy in WA.

Their  path is just bad for our physical and mental well being.

Fremantle Councillor Drive To Kill Off Local Business and Jobs

Source: Truck ban bid | Fremantle Herald Interactive

Lets look at the practicality of banning Trucks from Hampton Rd. Its Fremantle’s councils answer for everything ban, ban, ban.

All businesses west of Hampton Rd would be impacted with deliveries or operations that require trucks

The average brewery trucks are longer than a 20ft container truck, so that would make it quite difficult for pubs to get supplies.

No petrol for petrol stations west of Hampton Rd

I wonder how fishing boat harbour would function with no truck deliveries.

How would cruise ships get stores or deliveries on in Victoria Quay.

I guess that would make Little Creatures operations near impossible, no deliveries for them.

The council had an opportunity to redirect trucks off Hampton Rd by engaging with the state government to ensure that the Perth Freight Link did this function, leaving Hampton Rd only for necessary deliveries by trucks not through truck traffic. I guess they choose to not to ensure a good outcome for Freo.

Sadly as they are anti-car, anti-truck, anti road development they are also, anti business, anti jobs, anti development. You can’t have basic water front businesses that cant get deliveries. I guess this will make it difficult for businesses to move into Freo as they don’t know what our loony council will ban next. Bit hard to establish a business future with such instability.

Do they really think that they will be able to do all the development in Fremantle and ban containers at the same time.

I wonder how their events will run without containers?

When I drive down Hampton road the fastest traveling vehicles flying down the road are buses, trucks are stuck in the single congested lane with all the cars. the close calls I’ve seen for cyclists are the buses trying to overtake the bike riders without enough room for it when other vehicles are along side the bus.

You really wonder why a city ward councillor is trying to get traffic lights in Henderson, miles from Fremantles borders, this is the issue with many Fremantle councillors ,their constant meddling in others a fares, if they just stuck to relevant Fremantle issues which is what they are paid and there for.

Perhaps the real reason and timing for this story  is just another attempt by a councillor who has rarely been seen around town by the residents and ratepayers of the city ward, to get her profile out there for election time. Pretty sad a couple of months of community engagement ever 4 years.

Even sadder it must have been a slow news day for the herald to put his story on the front page of their paper, a rehashed idea that has been going on for 20 yrs plus, and the best the Councillor is promising is to lead a petition??? There is a reason its never been done, as with out a replacement route its a stupid impractical idea that shows little sense of the practicalities of life, business or common sense.

As a business and job killer its a great way to go. Fremantle already has a shocking reputation with delivery drivers as a place not to go to, business in town don’t need anymore challenges or extra costs.

What’s not surprising is this councillor Rachel Pemberton has spent her whole time saying what she is going to do, what she wants, I haven’t yet seen the action of representation, it seems to be all about her and what she wants.

Updated, Fremantles Light Rail, More Destructive to Fremantle Homes and Businesses, Than PFL?

Screenshot_2015-09-07-09-06-42

I understand the South St reserve link (Intramaps)is not quite working as I would like so here is a screen shot of what I was intending to show from intramaps. Now this is an indication of a reserve set aside some time ago and is not complete for the rail system to be built, so it would need to be expanded. Of course to see the full impact of how the reserve would impact homes an actual detailed plan would be needed. Not to mention the cycle paths they would want, car lanes and buses.

The Red line running down South St shows the properties impacted. Also allowing for the expansion west of the road reserve to Fremantle to allow the light rail to be added.

South St Rd Reserve

The link above takes you to a map that takes a few seconds to load. It may need to be zoomed in to South St , between, Carrington St and Bruce Lee Reserve

This map will show you South St reserve,  coloured in red which starts just west of Bruce Lee Oval and heads east out of Fremantle.

This is the space set aside to expand South St, which would be needed to incorporate a light rail system. Unless councils plan is to just ban cars on South St? In the Herald last month we see the article about  Rachel Pemberton,  EYES ON A LIGHT RAIL FUTURE

This would appear to make Fremantle Councils light rail more destructive to Fremantle than the PFL.  All the verge trees and many in peoples front yards would need to be cut down, or cleared to make way for Rachel’s Pemberton’s Light Rail Future.

  • How many families would lose homes on South St?
  • How many businesses would need to knocked down to make way for the new rail line?
  • How much of their blocks will be reclaimed for the new verges area?
  • All the big pine trees on South St before Carrington St would need to go.
  • About 80 trees between Carrington St and Stock St would need to go.
  • The impact east of Stock Rd could also be huge if over head power is needed, with many old large trees could over hang the power system.
  • How will this effect the value of all homes along South St especially those close to road with added rail noise and vibration. Wheel squeal and flanging noise are often causes of annoyance to residents as the high pitch screeching is mainly found at the high frequency end of the human audible noise spectrum?
  • Now its been made so public will real estate agents now have to warn prospective buyers of the developments the council is driving for.
  • Now the Councillor has come out and spoken about it so publicly, what impact could this have on Trans Perth not prioritizing new bus routes or possible rapid bus transit lanes, which TP development speaks of?
  • The months of turmoil on people and businesses while South St is dug up and the new infrastructure is put in place?
  • Worse, no road reserve is noted for the final leg to Fremantle, so who’s street could it drive through and what is the impact on loss of homes and businesses to for fill their ideology? Leaving years of uncertainly for local families
  • This is just the start of the questions of the impact that such a project could have.

The devastation on an old established suburb will be huge by driving a light rail system through these old heritage areas.

Fremantle’s Real Problem, Too Much Politics in Council

aus parliament house

Are there Delusions of Grandeur on Fremantle Council?

Yesterday on Freoview we see one of the real problems Fremantle faces, state and federal political ideology deeply entwined in Councillor fundamental position.  Quote ”Worse still, not only is Barnett willing to sell the Port but will use scarce funds to privatise the road that feeds it. Barnett & Abbott are racing to build their new truck sewer straight through the middle of East Fremantle and North Fremantle. In doing so, they will sever with the swiftness of a terrorist’s sword the connectivity’s that several generations of Fremantle people have fought so hard to maintain and rebuild.

Imagine a life behind high concrete walls that divides Fremantle like Berlin was. The freeway style toll road will make access in and out of our city centre hopelessly constrained especially from the north and east.”

I don’t get how he thinks the road is being privatised by selling the port?

Tonight Councillor Sullivan’s comments are emotive, politically motivated and basically should have no place in the council arena. Making emotionally provocative statements comparing the sale of state assets to the actions of terrorists beheading people have nothing to do with local government issues.

It seems clearer and clearer that council’s political ideologies and allegiances are clouding the real operation of council from its true function. The political links/loyalties of councillors should be secondary to their paid responsibilities of council duties.

If they feel their political ideologies are more important than their fiduciary duties to the rate payers and residents of Fremantle they should fore go their council positions to concentrate on state or federal politics.

It must be quite clear now if not before that comments that Dave Hume, Bill Massie made on Wednesday night that council’s actions be driven by their responsibilities and duties to its rate payer and residents base not personal political agendas is valid, as it is a real issue in Fremantle council?

The state government decision to sell the port may be dumb but the effect is on the whole state and best handled there.  The FPA make their own operational decisions, state or private owned, the COF opinion is just that?

Here is a little tit bit of the freoview discussion from Andrew and his Shakespearean style theatrics over the Perth Freight Link

Here is my response to Andrews’s theatrics, in fairness you should read his comments as well as mine, as I unlike the City of Fremantle believe people should read both sides of the story to better judge for themselves. I have posted it here on Fremantle Reform, so I can add links easily, so click on Roels link to see Andrews and others comments on the issue

FREMANTLE PORTS SALE A CONCERN FOR FREO; Freoview

My Comment to Andrews, see link above as seen on freoview

“First Andrew I will wait to see what proposal the 3 consortiums come up with before, I support one thing or the other (a point made by Rachel Pemberton at SPC) or start comparing High St to an active berlin wall. I would rather see an actual plan in black or white to form a view than make one, based on your over sensationalist rhetoric with executioners, swords, terrorists, communist walls, sewers etc, Isn’t it possible to have a normal discussion?

Trying to cross High St now on foot at times is a pretty risky affair now! I wouldn’t say it’s a safe road for neighbours to ample across now. Come to think of it if I wanted to go north or south I wouldn’t use that part of High St anyway I would cross over at Amherst where I’m not running the current truck gauntlet.

I must have missed the game of thrones series where they had terrorists, your quote was “In doing so, they will sever with the swiftness of a terrorist’s sword” doesn’t sound like a game of thrones analogy to me, though people should try and google “terrorist sword” and see how many links they get back to the game of thrones series. It may prove to be a fruitless task?

As for guaranteeing what kids will and don’t do I will leave their actions and accountability to their responsible guardians.

For a highway dividing a community I can show you examples of how they can be built where it’s a positive outcome with parks and grass but that would just leave you with another place to pour concrete as we saw in More Council Concrete for Fremantle Parks or you could look at Fremantle’s Councils Perceived Anti-Car Stance

Hamburger Deckel project in Germany is burying the A7 autobahn to make parks and new land

As the state government is about as forthcoming with detail on plans as the City of Fremantle is, i.e. Kings Sq hidden documents, I expect to see little in transparency from either. Didn’t the CEO reference that fact in his mini-series called the response.

As for little eco systems, I wasn’t the one who voted for the chainsaws and chippers to destroy 100+ trees on the old Kim Beazley site. In the name of higher density, that sounds like something Barnett would do though oh and a group of Fremantle councillors.

It’s great you’re so concerned about Cockburn wetland, perhaps if the councillors put as much effort into the tree canopy/open public spaces of Fremantle we wouldn’t have the second worse rating in Australia from 202020 report. Perhaps you could focus on the city you were elected to actually represent, a good point made by Dave Hume on Wednesday night. A quick look at google earth shows how barren Freo is from Parkland and the only significant greens spots are the esplanade, some sports grounds and the golf course and you poured concrete onto one. (I would mention the footie ground but if that’s handed over to the COF I can’t imagine it lasting to long.) Luckily the 202020 report was done before that, as that little gem could have tipped us over the line for no1 spot for worse hard covering report from the 202020 report.
