Fremantle Fire Sale by Council? How is it different from Barnetts?

Amazing how crowds can protest thru Fremantle for union day about the State Government selling our assets, where the very city there are protesting in, is going exactly the same thing they are protesting against, Barnett about. Makes it all look political not practical, the hordes of pollies doesn’t help the appearance.

This is sadly where common sense leaves the discussion and politics enters. Naturally the unions are anti -Barnett and lets face it, he does in my opinion  some dumb shit. But here I can see the Fremantle council and our Mayor doing exactly the same sort of stuff that Barnett is going. Whats the difference? The politics.

But some, due to their political blinders, or blind hate of anything right of the labor party, clouds their common sense and sight form viewing whats right in front of them.

City of Fremantle has sold or is planning to sell the following assets

  • Point St Car park block
  • Bannister St Car park
  • Queens gate building
  • The Spicer site
  • Henderson st Car park
  • The Stan Reilly aged-care site.

Have all these sales, been  put out for public tender? perhaps not.

Imagine the up roar if Barnett put the Freo port up for a private one vendor only choice lease, not even a sale but just a lease, the Freo uproar would be incredible.

Well that’s exactly what Freo council has done with one company for 3 separate assets in Fremantle, well not quite,  Fremantle council is selling them at a cut rate, not just leasing them without any public tender. At least the port we get back in 50 or so years for our kids to benefit from. Fremantle Councils assets are straight up just selling our kids inheritance. Cue another council rate rise.

All in the name of profiteering, isn’t that another thing May Day addresses, use of public assets for private profit? Right here in Freo, no need to look to hard.

HUGE FREMANTLE OVAL DEVELOPMENT PLANS from freoview

Now we see the council  wanting to sell off the Stan Reilly site, and invest the money in the oval.  Sounds good to a point. Will this investment make money and if so, for who??

Will it benefit the residents and rate payers or will it benefit the a select few event organizers who run festivals  in Freo?

Do these festivals all pay for the public space they take to use for their own personal profits?

Or does the council give these public spaces for Free at rate payers expense??

Do they pay to fix and repair the damage their events do the public park space, they so happily fence off?

Or do the rate payers and residences cough up for that bill too?

For a Mayor who, likes to talk about transparency, you have to wonder where it actually is?

Do these events take over all the parking in town limiting whats left for the rest of the cities businesses to use? So what do you think this new car park is paid for by, the sale of rate payers assets, will it be for the benefits of the said residents or will this car park become the free VIP car park for events included in their ticket price for companies to increase their gate charge and up the profit margin?

So the May parade photos of protesters make me laugh they are so one eyed they can’t see the Green and ALP dominated council is doing exactly the same thing and most of these locals who would march are the one who would  support the council.

So are they mad that the assets are being sold or is it just who’s selling them that is a problem?

That’s politics over common sense.

Fremantle Council Called Out For Wasting Rate Payers Money on Personnel Ideology

Freo’s green initiatives machine fails in plastic bag crusade

“Fremantle’s reputation for green causes precedes it and the council has been an assiduous supporter — often with ratepayer cash — of an array of environmental initiatives.”

Finally the main stream media in WA have removed their Rose coloured glasses in regards to Fremantle council.

This sort of reporting is a breath of fresh air for the dozen or so community groups that fremantle councils just dismisses out right when ever the try to raise issues with council or its grafitti loving Mayor Brad Pettitt, who publicly berated the President of the Fremantle Society, when he dared question a project the mayor is a major supporter of.

As we see below if u disagree with the mayor,  your  not sensible, words as typed by the mayor.

It is true that I was disappointed that Fremantle Society Henty Farrar (who is normally very sensible, informed and balanced in his views) based his rather critical public comments on,,,,,,,,,

The facts from Peirs Verstegen story in the West is clearly wrong as in fact MLC Peter Katsinbanis does officially represent people in Fremantle as its part of his electorate and it was not just libs who voted against it but 2 other parties as well, like normal quickly brushed over facts.

I love the greens outrage that another ban has failed, it seems that’s their whole policy for WA is a huge list of ban this ban that. Interesting that Lynn MacLaren talks of Fremantles councils legal entitlements to react to community desires, she has been very quiet on the communities desires NOT to have a booze barn at J-Shed for dozens of good reasons, guess its green backing green no matter what the cost.

What of course neither article mentioned were that Gareth Parkers article brings up a complaint,  that’s been made for years about the Fremantle council is the waste of rate payers money on their own personal ideologies.

Of course the greens would not complain about a carbon neutral fund ($30, 000+ of rate payers $$$$) for schools, being awarded by the city of Fremantle  to a member of the greens company, just about the time of her running for the bi-election for the federal seat of Canning, a mere coincidence to be sure.

These issues are just the tip of the iceberg for poor use or inappropriate of rate payers funds, should the West decide to dig a little deeper there is an Aladdin cave of stories to be published on the poor use of rate payers funds in Fremantle.

The Kings Sq business plan would be a great place to start, before we have a mayor building a monument to himself.

Its interesting the fear that local businesses have, about speaking openly about this issue,  as a shop owner put it to me, the FFF,( Freo Feral Factor) they did actually say the FFFF I’ll leave to your imagination what the 4th F was for. But there is a real concern by people if you voice your disapproval on certain issues, that some anti-social issues will be coming your way. Pretty poor in the 21st century in a Democracy like Australia that people have that concern, its more akin to stasi based organizations with stand over tactics or those who use public intimidation to drive their personal agendas.

This is an issue I have had mentioned to me before from other government bodies that have no wish to do community meeting issues, due to their staff being abused, spat on, intimated etc. Just like Telstra fixing vandalized equipment, their attitude why bother, new replaced today, trashed tomorrow.

Lucky Businesses had someone like Peter Katsambalis to turn too.

Fremantle’s Plastic Bag Saga

round about sign

Are plastic bags bad, yes I don’t think many people think they are good think, handy yes, but good for us I doubt it?

Fremantle plastic bag ban should be overturned, says WA Liberal MP Peter Katsambanis

Anyway last year Fremantle had a shot at it, (banning plastic bags) it was overturned by state government, why, well probably because it’s up to the state government to make laws for WA, not Fremantle Council. That may come as a shock to some of them but that’s reality.

I can hear the calls from some now, it’s what the Fremantle community wants, really, and if that was so it would already be in place as a good business practice. As if that’s what business wanted they would just buy the already easily obtainable biodegradable or degradable bags, about twice the price but if that’s what your customer wants, it would be a poor business decision not to use them. The fact that businesses do not have on mass in Freo just shows it’s not a priority for its customers base. If I go to peaches and they ask me box or bag, I choose the box also because it’s good for my compost.

It’s ridiculous that you can walk across the road, from Fremantle to East Freo walk into a deli buy something that will come in a plastic bag and walk home to Fremantle with your now illegal purchase. Fremantle is not big enough to have any impact on this issue to be worthwhile. If individual’s want this to happen then petition your local state or better federal members and take the issue to that level of government where it belongs, it’s not a local government issue.

Don’t know anything about Peter Katsambanis but his reported comments all seemed like common sense. I can hear the liberal bashing coming already.

Now I’m sure some will argue “it’s a great test case” seriously S.A. has been doing it for years if you need any facts just look at their data.  That’s not an invitation for council to sponsor a plastic bag junket to S.A., I’m sure the facts are online or maybe a couple of quick emails would get all the info needed on the situation. Same as their can recycle system, been around for years no need for test cases, they have all the info one would need.

Well just to wait and see what the government decides to do now, allow Freo to make its own laws, maybe take the issue state wide or just a quick no, time will tell?
